Pakistan and Indonesia have signed defence trade and industry agreements with Saudi Arabia; arrangements that highlight strengthening defence partnerships between predominantly Muslim nations.

A defence accord between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia was signed in Islamabad on 20 January, while a similar agreement between Indonesia and Saudi Arabia was signed in Jakarta two days later.

A statement by the Pakistani government said that under its agreement with Saudi Arabia the two countries will establish a joint military co-operation committee. It did not outline the responsibilities of the committee but local news reports said they include exploration of possible defence trade and industrial co-operation.

Reports in Islamabad said potential sales to Saudi Arabia include an unspecified command and control system from Pakistan, the Super Mushshak trainer aircraft, which is manufactured by the Pakistan Aeronautic Complex (PAC), and the JF-17 combat aircraft manufactured by PAC in partnership with the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC).
In Jakarta, officials from the Indonesian Ministry of Defence (MoD) signed with their counterparts from Saudi Arabia a "defence co-operation agreement", which the MoD said covered military training, exchanges, disaster relief, counter-terrorism as well as defence industry collaboration, joint research and development and technology transfer.

Indonesian deputy defence minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin indicated that such collaboration could be centred around a potential purchase by Saudi Arabia of Indonesia's indigenously developed Anoa 4x4 armoured patrol vehicle.

ANALYSIS
Pakistan and Indonesia's agreements with Saudi Arabia build on previous efforts and accords between the countries intended to strengthen defence collaboration.
They are also indicative of the increasingly strong defence relationships that are emerging between predominantly Islamic countries. These arrangements are likely to prove attractive for participating countries, given religious and cultural ties. It is also a possibility that any defence trade between such countries could be funded through the interest-free Islamic finance system.
