Pakistan and China plan joint military drills next year: CGS

BEIJING: Pakistan and China plan to hold joint military exercises in China next year, said Chief of General Staff (CGS) Lt General Salahuddin, who was leading a Pakistan Army delegation on a goodwill visit to China.

Talking to APP at the end of his five-day visit, he said the army and navy of both the countries had conducted joint exercises in Pakistan in the past, but Pakistan wanted to extend the scope of these drills. “We plan to carry out another exercise in China in 2008,” he said. He praised the cooperation between Pakistan and China and said that military relations between the two countries were unprecedented. He said the purpose of his visit was to reinforce bonds between the two armies, to discuss the equipment Pakistan wanted to induct for its army and to invite the Chinese side to visit Pakistan.

He said Pakistan had benefited from bilateral interaction and enhanced its expertise from such joint ventures. He said joint ventures included JF-17 Thunder combat aircraft, Al-Khalid tank, upgrading of Al-Zarrar tank, and the navy was likely to co-produce F-22B frigate.

He said that during his stay in Beijing, he had also met with People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Assistant Chief of General Staff Lt General Song Ling Gua. He said he had visited the 6th armoured division of the PLA and the National Defence University, in addition to visiting Chengdu, where he had held a meeting with the regional military commander.
