Pakistan ahead of India on human development indices: UN report

India lags behind its neighbours, Pakistan and Bangladesh, on human development indices like life expectancy at birth and mean or average years of schooling, a United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) report released on Thursday said. Titled "Real Wealth of Nations: Pathways to Human Development", the report had a global launch and was released at the UN in New York by UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon.

While India is ranked 119 on the Human Development Index (HDI) among 169 countries -- above Pakistan and Bangladesh which are ranked 125 and 129, respectively -- it lags behind the two on certain development indices.

According to the report, life expectancy at birth in India is 64.4 years, while in Pakistan it is 67.2 years. In Bangladesh, life expectancy is 66.9 years.

Similarly, mean years of schooling in India is 4.4 years while in Pakistan and Bangladesh it is 4.9 and 4.8 years respectively.

Sri Lanka, which is ranked above India on HDI at 91, also fares better than India on the two indices. Its life expectancy at birth is 74.4 years and mean years of schooling is 8.2 years.

On some positive note, in terms of growth of income, India is considered one of the top 10 countries. China is on the top position in this index.

Finance Ministry's chief economic advisor Kaushik Basu, who was present at the India launch of the report, said: "India has a lot of catching up to do. There is scope to do so much better."

These reports are very misleading because in India huge disparities exist .Some places have high educational levels which other places lag in literacy. There are developed cities/districts/regions in India which far outstrip any of these countries as far as education levels or healthcare is concerned. At least in India's case overall statistics can be very misleading....

India should not try to become another China. Pakistan has less pollution which is a big role player in life expectancy. Greener is always better.

Hey, this is the right spirit.
This is just a beginning for India, inshallah the disparity will reduce. It's already getting so hard to find domestic helpers in Mumbai !

Backward states like Bihar are developing. We're dealing with the Naxalites, something we have ignored for decades. We're on the right track.

What's your point ?

On one hand you never miss a chance to praise China and criticize India, and on other hand you advice India to not follow China's path..I'm confused. :what:

Edit: AK-47s are also a big player in life expectancy.

Pakistan will take it with greetings!

But when,IMF or WB say that India will be the worlds fastest growing country in the late 2011,its all rubbish.
When intelligence institutes of US and Australia predict that India will be an economic superpower by 2020.
Its BS!

Anyways,i am not like that.
Congratz to Pakistan and BD.

Accepting reality is always better.
*In all fields*

In my opinion biggest hindrances are-
1) Pollution(Automobile, Industrial, Agricultural)
2) Gender disequilibrium
3) Corruption at both Political and Administrative level.

Pakistan fares well on the first two..

:rofl::rofl:

Believe me friend, in 2020 india will be a country that china had in 1990-2000, even china will not surpass USA as a superpower before 2025, even when there economy is 3-4time bigger then india, and with better speed of progress then you and with very high literacy rate + HDI.:china:

Your love for China is not showing you the correct numbers. In 2001 China's GDP was $ 1.325 trillion that was India's GDP in 2009/10.

You opened your economy 13 years before us remember? So naturally you'd be a decade ahead of us easily. Why so surprised? We never said we're just touching your heels in the race. We accept we're behind you which we will gradually work to change.

I have a problem with the Maternal mortality rate for India. That is a very old figure i believe. The maternal mortalirt rate figure for india is very old , an inter-agency estimate of UN given on this UNICEF website say that in 2008 INDIAN MMR was 230 and Pakistan's MMR was 260. These are the latest figures. Here is the link - childinfo.org/maternal_mortality_ratio.php
There is something wronf with the MMR reported in this report. It isn't credible. I am not being able to post the URL since i am a fresh member.

If possible i request any other more experienced member on this forum to post the URL.
