In a volte-face, Pakistan’s Cabinet on Thursday rejected a proposal of its Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) to import cotton and sugar from India, according to a Cabinet minister.

“Cabinet stated clearly NO trade with India,” Minister for Human Rights Shireen Mazari said in a tweet soon after a Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Imran Khan on Thursday.

“PM made clear there can be no normalisation of relations with India until they reverse” their actions viz Kashmir of August 5 2019, tweeted Mazari, who is known for her hawkish stand on Kashmir.

The Cabinet decision comes a day after Pakistan’s new Finance Minister Hammad Azhar on Wednesday announced that the country will lift a nearly two-year long ban on the import of cotton and sugar from India after a meeting of the ECC chaired by him.

Ahead of the Cabinet meeting, Mazari had said that all ECC decisions have to be approved by Cabinet and only then can they be seen as “approved” by the government.

“Just for the record - All ECC decisions have to be approved by Cabinet & only then they can be seen as “approved by govt”! So today in Cabinet there will be discussion on ECC decisions incl trade with India & then govt decision will be taken! Media shd be aware of this atleast!” Mazari tweeted.

Azhar’s announcement on Wednesday to import cotton and sugar from India had raised hopes of a partial revival of bilateral trade relations, which were suspended after the August 5, 2019 decision of New Delhi to revoke the special status of Jammu and Kashmir.

India is the world’s biggest producer of cotton and the second biggest sugar manufacturer.

ECC should had kept the sensitivity of the issue in mind before even considering such an option.
Good it was turned down by the cabinet.

What kind of childish governance is this?

The Prime Minister himself sent the summary to the ECC to be approved.

You take a decision, send your only promising young minister to announce it and defend it. The next day, after some backlash, you take a U-Turn.

This is not how you run a parchoon ke dukan let alone a country of 220 million.

Now supporters of Imran khan are active in PDF with such threads.

Do Minister for Finance and Revenue and other Committee members not come under the government of Imran Khan? Or He will come and Say," Mujhe to Bataya Nahi yaa pata hi tha"?

It was a calculated risk by Imran to approve first then wait and watch for public reactions. It has taken the U-turn because it will damage his image to the public.

He did not want to label him as "Modi ka yaar". He made his path actually difficult by saying many words to Modi. Now, How can common people or media digest a new U-turn.

A difficult time ahead for Imran Khan. Now, what will he do?

1. Already taking the U-turn on the previous stance and will prefer to start trade and business with India and normalize the relationship with India.

Challenge for HIm - He will lose the many supporters and people will be calling him "Modi ka yaar - Part 2"

2. Again will take U-turn and Back to the tweeter and start posting something about RSS, India, and Modi...

Get lost indiot. We dont need your certificate on defending our government or not defending.
We will take whatever decision we think is right, than present it in the cabinet for approval, if the cabinet doesnt want it, they can reject it as they did. This is a fuckin democracy afterall. Keep your irrelevant opinion to yourself.

Calling india out for the hindutva extremist communal shithole it is has been essential to reveal India as the disaster it is

There can be no turning back

There can be no work with a hindutva state

Even the Bangladeshi are understanding this

Muslims of the subcontinent must be of one voice when dealing with hindutva

Just import whatever we need from China or ANY other friendly countries. There are so many options available that it's ridiculous that we need to import ANYTHING from those that call for the death and destruction of the Pakistani people and nation.

The federal cabinet on Thursday deferred the Economic Coordination Committee's (ECC) decision to allow the import of sugar, cotton and cotton yarn from India through land and sea routes.
The decision has been deferred until India reinstates Article 370 of its Constitution, which guaranteed a semi-autonomous status for Indian-occupied Kashmir. Pakistan had suspended all bilateral trade with Indian following New Delhi's decision to revoke Article 370 in August 2019.
"Today Cabinet stated clearly NO trade with India," Minister for Human Rights Shireen Mazari tweeted.

She said Prime Minister Imran Khan had made it clear that "there can be no normalisation of relations with India until they reverse their illegal actions" regarding occupied Kashmir taken on Aug 5, 2019.
Speaking to Geo News, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi also said the cabinet had ruled that "normalising relations with India will not be possible" until it overturned the measures it took regarding occupied Kashmir's special status.
"A perception was emerging that relations with India have moved towards normalisation and trade has been opened," Qureshi said. "There was an exchange of thoughts on this and there was a unanimous opinion on this and it was the prime minister's [opinion] as well that as long as India does not review the unilateral steps it took on August 5, 2019, normalising relations with India will not be possible."
Earlier today, Mazari had stated that all ECC decisions "have to be approved by the federal cabinet".
"Only then they can be seen as 'approved by government'," she said, adding that the "media should be aware of this at least".

Finance Minister Hammad Azhar had made the decision to restore trade ties with India public on Wednesday, stating that the price of sugar in India is "significantly cheaper than Pakistan; therefore, we have decided to open its trade and allow commercial import of 500,000 tonnes of white sugar”.
The minister had said the decision was taken to improve supplies and discourage price hike in Pakistan as sugar in India was 15pc to 20pc cheaper.
An official statement had said the ECC allowed the commercial import of white sugar from India till June 30, 2021, through land and sea routes, on the basis of the quota issued by the Ministry of Commerce. The decision would be time and cost effective and would also stabilise the prices of sugar in the domestic markets, it had added.
Prime Minister Imran, who is also Minister-in-Charge of Commerce and Textile, had approved the summaries for import of cotton, cotton yarn and sugar to be placed before the ECC for approval. It meant that the prime minister was already in support of lifting the ban on these products' imports from India.

NO SURRENDER to those that want to commit genocide against us.

I appreciate the parliament has made a solid decision

India can't kill our brothers in Kashmir and expect us to do trade like business is usual and at same time buy rafael jets from France with our money with which we will buy the tomatoe and onions

I think if it was tactical, then foreign policy is not a local politics.. that you create an issue and hype, then take back your stance and put your demand.

Trade is done with a friendly nation not a hostile nation basic of trade

a) India has Kashmir under a lock down , people are imprisoned
b) Shooing across the LOC from Indian side
c) Spread of Bombing in Pakistan with Proxy in Balochistan / Afghanistan route

There is sufficient reason to reject any trade / sports activities

I am 100% in support of this , if there is shortage get it from Central Asia or else where

It was a calculated move to test the public mood. Already COAS statement 'to bury the past' raised many eyebrows in the country and this was also not going well since yesterday.

Modi really has done lots of damage to Pakistan India ties in the last few years so the ball is certainly in his court to do more to win the trust here.
