KARACHI: Sri Lankan cricket team’s tour of Pakistan has been finalized and it will arrive in Pakistan on January 18.

Sri Lanka’s sports minister Gamini Lokuge, during the telephonic conversation with the chairman Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), gave the final shape to tour schedule.

The Sri Lankan team will tour Pakistan in two segments, playing three One-day Internationals in the first leg beginning from January 18 and then returning in February for a two-Test series in the second leg.

The three one-dayers will be played in Karachi on January 21, in Lahore on January 24 and in Faisalabad on January 27.

The Sri Lankan squad would then return to Pakistan in mid-February for two Tests in Karachi and Lahore schedule of which will be announced later.

"Sri Lanka Cricket has agreed to split the tour and they will be arriving on January 18 for three one-day internationals," Pakistan Cricket Board chief operating officer Saleem Altaf said.

Sri Lanka's tour had come into question after the country's sports minister Gamini Lokuge disbanded the interim national cricket board and sacked its chairman Arjuna Ranatunga.

But Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapakse later gave the green light for the tour, making the team the first to play a Test in Pakistan since South Africa played here in October 2007.

salman butt is good and is matured now but I have my doubts against jamshed.

17-member Pak squad selected for series against Sri Lanka

LAHORE: The selectors have already made up their minds about the selection of the Pakistan 17-member squad against the forthcoming Sri Lanka series, which would be given a final shape today in a meeting between the selection committee and the coach.

The meeting between the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB)’s selection committee and the coach being held today would be giving a final shape to the squad, which would later be announced after the approval of PCB Chairman, Ijaz Butt.

The 17 cricketers selected for one-day series included Shoaib Malik, Salman Butt, Nasir Jamshed, Khurram Manzoor, Yunus Khan, Misbahul Huque, Shahid Afridi, Kamran Akmal, Shoaib Akhtar, Sohail Tanvir, Umar Gul, Saeed Ajmal, Rao Iftikhar, Fuwwad Alam, Sohail Khan, Umar Amin, and Faisal Iqbal. Out of these 17 cricketers, one could be dropped.

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) selection committee, headed by Abdul Qadir, on Monday named a 15-member Pakistan squad for the first Sri Lanka one-day international to be played at the National Stadium in Karachi on January 21. The selectors have included uncapped left-hand batsman Umar Amin in the outfit to fill the void created by the defection of senior batsman Mohammad Yousuf to the ‘rebel’ Indian Cricket League (ICL).

“Amin has been rewarded for his excellent performances in domestic cricket,” a Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) spokesman told reporters. 19-year-old Amin was the second-highest run-getter in last month’s Pentangular One-day Cup, scoring 254 runs at an average of 84.66 and strike-rate of 89.12. He has impressed on several Under-19 tours and was also part of Pakistan’s Under-19 squad at last year’s World Cup in Malaysia. “He is a real prospect and the coach and captain were both keen to have him in the squad, to encourage him and groom him further. He has impressed a number of people this season,” the spokesman said. “The squad is for the first match only and teams for later matches will be announced after the first game,” he added.

The selection committee has relied on traditional Pakistan strength – pace – for the three-match ODI series. Fast bowler Sohail Khan returns after missing the Abu Dhabi series against West Indies in November as does all-rounder Yasir Arafat. Ahead of both are Shoaib Akhtar, Sohail Tanvir, Umar Gul and Rao Iftikhar Anjum, thus giving Pakistan six options. Controversial Akhtar has been named despite that fact that he is still entangled in a court battle with the board over an 18-month ban and Rs seven million fine imposed last year for disciplinary reasons. An appeal by Akhtar is pending in the Lahore High Court and he has been able to continue playing after the court suspended the ban until the appeal was decided. But there are some surprises in this squad, prime among them the exclusion of Nasir Jamshed. Arguably Pakistan’s find of a lean year in 2008, Jamshed has been overlooked despite being in the runs domestically. Jamshed missed the Abu Dhabi matches after pulling out at the last minute with an illness and was replaced by Khurram Manzoor who retains his place over Jamshed. Arafat, the 26-year-old who played the last of his eight ODIs in February last year, was preferred over all-rounder Fawad Alam. Pakistan’s middle-order batting lineup will revolve around experienced Younis Khan, Misbahul Haq and captain Shoaib Malik. Sri Lanka series will be the first test for Malik after he was given an indefinite extension as the team’s captain earlier this month.

The only spinner in the squad is offspinner Saeed Ajmal, which means there’s no place yet for legspinner Danish Kaneria who was surprisingly promoted to the top grade of central contracts and noises coming from the new management had suggested he may get a look-in under these selectors, having long been outside of Pakistan’s ODI thinking. But a poor showing in the Pentangular Cup seems to have gone against him for the moment. Sri Lanka agreed to tour Pakistan after India last month cancelled their eagerly awaited tour. New Delhi refused to allow the team to tour Pakistan amid heightened political tensions triggered by the Mumbai attacks in November, which India has blamed on Pakistan-based militants. Sri Lanka will arrive in Pakistan on January 18. The second match will be played in Lahore (January 24) and the last match has been shifted from Faisalabad to Multan (January 27). Sri Lanka will return to Pakistan next month for Tests in Karachi and Lahore.

A 169-run opening stand between Salman Butt and Khurram Manzoor steered Pakistan to an eight-wicket win over Sri Lanka in the first One Day International against Sri Lanka in Karachi after pace bowlers Iftikhar Anjum and Umar Gul shared seven wickets to begin 2009 in style for the home side.

Sri Lanka won the toss and after their opening batsmen Tillakaratne Dilshan (42) and Sanath Jayasuriya (38) had seen off new ball bowlers Shoaib Akhtar and Sohail Tanvir, Gul ended a stand of 71 in 8.4 overs when he had Dilshan caught by Salman Butt.

Jayasuriya and Mahela Jayawardene (1) were dismissed within five balls of each other before a stand worth 54 for the fourth wicket between Kumar Sangakkara and Chamara Kapugedera put the match back in the balance.

Sangakkara stroked 49 in 70 balls before he offered Salman Butt another catch off of Iftikhar and Kapugedera made 27 in 43 balls before he was bowled by leg-spinner Shahid Afridi.

Pakistan then seized complete control and once all-rounders Jehan Mubarak (8), Farveez Maharoof (11) and Thilan Thushara (0) were dismissed cheaply, Iftikhar ran through the tail to complete career-best ODI figures of four for 42 with Umar Gul closing on three for 30.

Shoaib Malik was the other man to take a wicket, his victim being Maharoof after Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to bat.

Salman Butt, resplendent in golden batting gloves, batted as if Pakistan had never been away from hosting top class cricket and he underlined his class in partnership with Khurram Manzoor.

The pair added 169 runs for the first wicket with Manzoor overcoming a slow start to post a career-best effort in ODIs of 83 in 128 balls with nine fours. The lack of acceleration early on did not hurt Pakistan as Butt was quickly into his stride, hitting 13 boundaries in all and reaching his eighth career century in 116 balls shortly before the winning run was scored.

Manzoor would not have been the choice of all Pakistan fans, many of whom would have preferred to see Nasir Jamshed in his place but his performance justified his selection.

Their stand was finally ended in the 38th over when Manzoor gave Muttiah Muralitharan a caught and bowled chance and a bright innings of 20 in 22 balls from Younus Khan was ended when he was caught by Ajantha Mendis off of Maharoof, leaving captain Malik to help Butt seal the match with an unbeaten 11 in 10 balls, Pakistan cruising home in the 46th over of their reply.

The second of three matches takes place tomorrow at the same venue.

I dont like this new guy Khuram Manzoor. I think he should only open for tests. I think the reason he got selected in the ODI is because selectors wanted to see him how he would perform in the Tests. I think and i hope that is the only intention of having him play this ODI series. Because Nasir has played some great knocks against good sides like India, and Sri Lanka, and is ready to handle pressure of 300 runs or so. Which i think Manzoor definitely lacks due to his poor strike rate in the domestic cricket as well as the International (which isn't so easy as the domestic setup).
