Pak Taliban trying to overthrow govt in Islamabad: US

But the damages they cause is very big.

How much more damage they can cause? They have taken civilian lives. Killed armed forces. Destroyed infrastructure of the places they once controlled. Overall destroyed our economy and earned us a bad name. No guerrilla force can win against a full fledged army no matter how much formidable they are.

My friends I will tell you the reason why mister gates is saying this now, he had hoped that the situation will be much worse by now as someone armed the TTP to hell but PA countered it and quashed the insurgency to such an extent that no major attacks on cities have occurred in more than month.

Mr gates had thought that by using TTP, they can get us to engage with Afghani Taliban which we should not do as it is not our war. TTP has lost it's command structure and is weaker then ever, it cannot to anything anymore apart from it's militants staging small attacks in the region they are based in.

Mr gates is a clever guy but we also know what is going on, no one will be able to overthrow the government in Islamabad, I can guarantee you that.

.
They are doing such big damages in Kabul as well. What does that mean they are able to overthrow the govt which have full support of "Super Power".

Exactly, that is what i am talking about. Overthrowing the gov is not an issue. We all know that Taliban cant beat the gov, but they kill people, cause all sort of damages. YOu should know taht people in Afghanistan are living in a really frustrated condistion. this unholy insurgency have made their lives as hell. As far as i know, people in Pakistan are also having a really hard time. If these guys are not dealt with swiftly in pak and afghanistan, things will get worse.

Dear Mehru, You will be amazed to see how much more is there for them to damage. There will be endless sufferings to the people and country if they are not eliminated.

@ ahmed, but in our country we have destroyed the insurgency to such an extent that they cannot attack as they were doing so in 2008/9 when a bomb a day was going off and that too in cities. Sure there are still some incidents but overall the situation has improved far too much.

Unfortunately the Taliban in Afghanistan is getting stronger as they can not ono attack cities but even with international forces are finding it difficult to handle the insurgency.

Dear T-Faz, Trust me they are still capable of launching all sort of attacks. They dont need full territory control to bring damages. The Taliban in Afghanistan were overthrown, but they gained strenght again and look at it now. Orokzai is still burning and no prospect of victory yet, NW is not under the control of the gov, Hakeemullah have poped out again like vampire. All they need is the sympathy of some brainwashed, misguided people to carry out attacks, and we all know that in these 2 countries, there isnt any shortages of these types of poeole. Karachi is another place that the taliban can have a eye on it, there are lots of things going on. I just hope we collectively punish and eliminate these guys in both countries, otherwise they will finish us.

Taliban's intentions are never any secret to people. The question is: will they have the ability to overthrow the government of pakistan? i dont think so, BUT they will be/are able to undermine the security of pakistan and make the lives of ordinary people a hell, they will also successfully manage to disrupt any progress and development. Time to think seriousely about the Taliban and stop making difference between them as bad and good taliban.

dint karzai came hopping when they were arrested in karachi alleging that pakistan was derailing the talks with taliban??stop using your double edge sword!:flame:

And where did this ethnic issue come from? Some pakistani members cant live without bringing ethnic issues in the middle especially pashtoons. for your information, even now the gov is consisted of majority pashtoon officials, ministers and other high ranking officers. By the way, dont pray that much for a pashtoon dominance, BECAUSE it has always been the pashtoons who are trying to bring the issue of Pashtoonistan, they always see NWFP as their own territory, go to pashtoon websites, they call every nasty names against pakistan, i dont wana repeat it here, other ethnic groups dont have this pashtoonistan in their head. Even the taliban who were puppets of pakistan never recognized durand line as proper border, so think deeply before you make a comment.

Pak Taliban trying to overthrow govt in Islamabad: US

Pakistan's Tehreek-e-Taliban is not only trying to overthrow the government in Islamabad, but is also launching attack against other countries, including the US, defence secretary Robert Gates said on Friday.

"What we have seen here is yet another new phenomenon, and that is the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan not only trying to overthrow the government of Islamabad, in Islamabad, but also launch attacks outside Pakistan and, in this case, against us," Gates told reporters at a Pentagon news briefing.

"I think that when the Pakistani Taliban approached Islamabad a year and a half ago, or whenever it was, was a wake-up call for the Pakistanis that this group was an existential danger for the government of Pakistan itself," he noted.

"We now have a mutual interest in trying to stop this group, stop it from carrying out attacks inside Pakistan, stop it from carrying out attacks outside of Pakistan, and especially in the United States," he said.

Referring to the recent visit of national security advisor General (rtd) James Jones and CIA Director Leon Panetta to Islamabad early this week, Gates said: "I suspect that the main theme of these talks that were held was, how we can intensify our cooperation in dealing with this mutual threat that we face?"

Gates said: "My impression has been that there has been close cooperation since the bomber was arrested. So I think it's more about that than any qualitative change."

Appearing at the same news conference, Admiral Mike Mullen, Chairman of the Joint Chief of Staff, praised the counter-terrorism measures being taken by the Pakistani Army.

"With respect to North Waziristan and my engagement with General (Asfaq Parvez) Kayani: Well over a year ago, he'd indicated that, as has been reported, that there are plans to execute that mission. But very specifically, the timeline's really up to him, and it goes back to what I understand and believe, that he's stretched," Mullen said.

"He's got two fronts. He's got a military that's lost a lot of soldiers, sacrificed a great deal. And it makes a lot of sense to me that he does get to pick this timeline. They're struggling in the build phase in Swat, behind the security that he's established there. So this is not a one-of kind of thing. It's really part of an overall campaign plan," Mullen observed.

Showing full faith in Kayani, Mullen said: "The other thing I'd say is, what he's told me he would do; when I have dealt with him in the past, what he has said he would do in the future he's always done."

Gates said: "I would just add to that he has, I think, seven divisions and 140,000 troops in that area. So it is a huge effort that Pakistan is making."
