NEW DELHI: Government has given full backing to border forces to go on the offensive in the event of unprovoked firing from Pakistan along the Indo-Pak border. The result is that border forces have pulled out all stops and gone for targeted and precision firing which has led to far more casualties on Pakistan side in just 10 days of firing this year than was witnessed in 30 days of skirmishes last year in August.

As many as eight people, including soldiers, LeT terrorists and civilians, have been killed in Pakistan and over two dozen injured in the firings that began on August 16 this year. On the Indian side, however, there have been only two casualties — of civilians. All these incidents have taken place on the International Border in Jammu guarded by BSF.

"Ever since mid-August ceasefire violations, we have gone on complete offensive, firing both guns and area weapons. We are thrice in strength of Pakistan Rangers and thus have as many weapons. This has resulted in heavy casualties on the other side even though Pakistan Rangers are being supported by their Army. We will continue to retaliate fiercely until Pakistan stops firing," said a senior BSF officer.

BSF sources said Islamabad has also deployed Pakistan Army's 12 Mujahideen Battallion in Charwa sector to help Pakistan Rangers.

At a meeting held at home ministry with minister Rajnath Singh, NSA Ajit Doval and BSF DG DK Pathak among others discussed the issue of escalating tension on the Indo-Pak border. Sources said government is fully backing all action taken by BSF and asked it to ensure safety of civilians in border areas. Pathak said, "We are giving befitting reply to ceasefire violations from Pakistan. At the same time we are trying not to hit civilian areas in Pakistan."

The force has been forcing villagers in border areas out of the range of Pakistan bullets and shells during the night. "We are making them sleep in schools and other government buildings away from their homes. During the day they return to their daily chores in their villages as most of the firing takes place at night," said a BSF officer.

The August offensive of 2013 had begun after Pakistan forces had killed five Indian soldiers patrolling the border. The killing had followed the January beheading of an Indian armyman leading to nationwide outrage. Forces of the two countries exchanged bullets for the whole month before an understanding was reached in September.

Even if one were to believe that a 100 Indian jawans have been killed this year by Pakistan....kya ukhad liya Pakistan ne?

Are you really so blind that you fail to see why this drama is being played out in the border just when Nawaz Sharif is under the cosh by IK, TuQ and co.?

What drama ? Give your brain a rest .. It was the army tht told Nawaz to stfu n went into NWA ... At a time when all politicians were ranting about peace talks... The army doesn't t support Nawaz,Imran or the mullah .. So stop with these ridiculous theories.

Pak doesn’t want peace: BSF IG

“We presume Pakistan doesn’t want peace on the border as our 16 attempts on the hotline seeking sector commander-level flag meetings were turned down by the other side,” Kumar said.

JAMMU: Against the backdrop of continuous ceasefire violations on the international border, BSF (Jammu frontier) inspector general Rakesh Kumar on Sunday said Pakistan did not want peace since they (Pak Rangers) had not only refused flag meetings despite several attempts, but also denied any violations.

"We presume Pakistan doesn't want peace on the border as our 16 attempts on the hotline seeking sector commander-level flag meetings were turned down by the other side," Kumar told reporters here. "In the recent past also, whenever Indo-Pak flag meetings were held, our counterparts have always denied the ceasefire violations. They're in no mood of holding a dialogue at a flag meet... We, on our part, are ready for peace but it's now up to Pakistan to decide whether they want calm along borders or not."

Referring to the recent ceasefire violations, he said: "Since July 16, Pakistan has violated the ceasefire 30 times till date — of which 25 violations have been witnessed in Ranbir Singh Pura Sector."

He said the Pakistan Army was sheltering Pak Rangers in firing and suspicious movements of suspects were also seen across the border, but alert BSF troops had successfully foiled every nefarious design. He said the militants were seen at the 'launching pads' on the other side and the Pak Army was trying hard to push them into the Indian side. "Tight vigil is being maintained and a well-planned border mechanism has been put in place to successfully foil any such attempts from militants," he said.

You mean to say Nawaz has no control over the Army in spite of being PM?

My assertion is merely a theory indeed, but it isn't on shaky ground either. Seen this plenty of times before not to recognize the pattern.

You can imagine whatever you like .. You guys are for at make belief stories.

stop counting how many you killed, count how many you are making poor with this act of unprovoked firing. Indian Lobby around the world has enough influence that they can stop companies to invest in Pakistan with huge amount of money and shares.

Towards military scenario, India is well capable of handling such fire across border, conventionally Pakistan cannot take over.

A freaking sniper?? (yes yes I know this is probably claimed to be a tactic both sides use)

Can we all just think about this for a second. This is not a death by indiscriminate machine gun or mortar fire, this is a cold, calculated kill. A sniper kill is no accident, someone has had to look down a scope, wait for the perfect moment to take the shot and pull the trigger just once. Whilst it could be claimed that MG and mortar fire are used to keep the heads of the other side down, Sniper firing is deliberate, targeted and surgical with only one intention- to take life.

The fact this doesn't stir up a bigger frenzy is sinister in itself.

This isn't about wanting peace or not- this is about diverting attention away from the perilous domestic situation for Nawaz Sharif, this is as transparent as it gets.

The trouble with these things between India and Pakistan is too many assumptions are made- people assume both want peace, people assume both sides face similar domestic compulsions, both sides assume the civilian governments in both sides hold the same grip on their militaries or that both militaries/border forces operate with the same autonomy. There is an inherent asymmetry to the entire thing, I'm not saying India is necessarily working all out on trying to get peace but where it might show indifference to the peace process (in reality despite making all the right noises in public) preferring to maintain the status quo, it is in Pakistan's interests (as they see it) to keep the issues alive and on the boil- something I believe elements of the state have admitted to in the past or at least alluded to. To India the border/Kashmir issue is a nuisance these days (blunt truth) but to elements in the Pakistani state and to political leaders in Pakistan when necessary it is their reason for existence.
