UK citizen Mariyam Khaliq landed in Kerala searching for her absconding husband, fought a case against him and won a hefty alimony.(Facebook/Mariyam Khaliq)

An Indian hailing from Kerala, who deserted his Pakistani-origin British wife and married again, was traced by the woman to his home town in Malappuram district and made to pay alimony after a long and arduous legal procedure on Thursday.

While doing his MBA in London, Noushad Hussain, from Chavakkad in the district, befriended a Pakistani-origin British citizen Mariyam Khaliq (34), a sales officer. After 18 months’ courtship, they got married in April 2013. A year later, Noushad left UK promising to return after getting his parents’ nod and solemnise their marriage again in Kerala.

She said initially he used to call her but later the calls stopped and he remained incommunicado. After some time, he sent a letter saying his parents were against the marriage, and he would not come back to the UK.

Since he didn’t leave much trace in UK, she landed in Malappuram in 2015 with their wedding album, trying to locate him. But the task was far from easy, especially because of her Pakistani background, with even police officers, literally shooing her away.

Moved by her plight, ‘Snehitha,’ a Kudumbhasree (a successful women self-help group)-controlled NGO, came forward to help her. After two months’ of intense search, Hussain, who was getting ready for another marriage, was located. When he refused to accept her, she filed a case against him in Kunnamkulam first-class magistrate court in 2015.

Later, the magistrate granted her permission to stay in Hussain’s house and directed the police to give her protection. Despite her stay at his house, Hussain went ahead with his second marriage.

She said his family, citing her Pakistani roots, tried to intimidate her on a number of occasions. They also gave a false complaint, saying she was an agent of Pakistan intelligence outfit but she was unmoved.

“They tried their best to cancel my visa, but I was firm,” she told HT.

Soon, many good samaritans and lawyers came around. After obtaining a divorce decree from London, a settlement was brokered before the court, as per which she would be paid a one-time alimony that was commensurate with the living conditions in the UK.

“I made three trips to India in between and faced many hardships. It is not for money alone. I want to teach him a lesson for playing with my life. I want to give a message that women can’t be taken for granted and fooled so easily,” she said, adding she would tour the country before leaving for UK.

“People are friendly here. Though the system is a bit slow, it works effectively. I hope my case will work as a deterrent to many women who are duped in a similar fashion,” she said.

Glad to here she got justice. ANY SOB such as this guy that left her and tried to re-marry deserves severe punishment, not just have to pay settlement. I hope he is sent to jail. Assuming the facts of the case as reported here at face value.

UK is a dead country. With Brexit it has become even more dead. Apart from saying that I live in west, there in nothing is UK.

dead in what way? Their economy is fine, they have some of the best higher education, their rule of law is exemplary and their language runs the world. You think Brexit affects them? Sure it does, but watch what happens to Europe without them.

Don't underestimate us. Remember Tamils under Cholas went up as far north as Bihar and Bengal and conquered them. You folks are too weak to face us. Not even the Mughals could hold onto us for long. I presume you pashtos or punjabis have never faced off against the tamil armies, if you had you would have known how it feels to get your behinds kicked by us. Oh I forgot the Marathas, who btw, also happen to be south Indians, have already kicked your behinds. Still haven't recovered from that ignominy I guess.

And yeah Tamil men and women are far better looking than you folks. Now go have a cry will ya?

Why she marry a ganga dweller, her fault i say.

but as per islam he is allowed to marry I guess?
and if he has said 3 times talaq to her then it is a divorce :) There is no need of any proof.

Recently I came across an interesting video ... You'll enjoy this one .

I've seen this before.
Women should not have to pay for alimony but men should, despite equal rights and equal treatment lol, despite having the ability to keep jobs and be independent. Should a symbolic explanation of feminism, wanting equality in only one direction.

However, in this case, based on the info given ... It was the dude's fault. You can't marry someone first and be like yeah well my parents object and Im not going to return to the UK to his lawful wife at that point.

That's fine and all, but the problem is society wouldn't bat an eye lid if the woman was the one to leave him for any reason. Women can literally leave for any reason, or no reason at all, and all the guy is left to do is provide alimony and child support.

What he is saying is that since the person who married that Pakistani Muslim is a Muslim from Kerela and as per Islam, a man is allowed to marry four.
However, here they must understand that in Islam you are allowed to marry up to four women provide you can do justice with all. Quran also say since you will not be able to do justice therefore marry only one.

Islam restricts 4 wives and gives guidlines, unlike other who do not restrict.

Since that gentleman was unable to do justice with the Pakistani woman, based on that as per Islam he was making a great sin and he shouldn't marry some one else.
