CHANDIGARH: The BJP on Saturday alleged that Pakistan was not giving the true picture over the number of Indian prisoners lodged in jails there. There are over 800 Indians in Pakistan jails while Islamabad acknowledges the presence of just 270, said BJP leader and RajyaSabha MP AvinashRaiKhanna here.

Handing over a cheque for Rs 2.8 lakh to the family of Chambail Singh, a Jammu and Kashmir resident, who died in a Lahore jail in January, the BJP leader demanded that international pressure should be built up on the neighboring country for the safety of Indian prisoners in Pakistan jails.

"A compensation of Rs 1 crore should be given by Jammu and Kashmir government to Chambail Singh's family, while Rs 25 lakh should be given by the Centre," Khanna, who is also incharge of J-K affairs of the party, said.

Chambail Singh died in Lahore's Kot Lakhpat jail on January 15 after allegedly being attacked by fellow jail inmates. Another Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh was also lodged in the same jail and similarly attacked by fellow inmates, leading to his death at a hospital in Lahore.

Khanna said he has written to President Pranab Mukherjee, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Union home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde on the matter. "I have requested that, like Sarabjit Singh's family, Chambail Singh's kin should also be given compensation. The J&K government should also give a compensation of Rs 1 crore, like the Punjab government did in Sarabjit Singh's case," he said.

Punjab BJP on Saturday held a "havan" at its office in memory of Chambail Singh and handed the money to Singh's kin. Chambail Singh's son Dara Singh, speaking about his family's plight, said, "My father had written letters to us, but we received those after his death. We want that he should be given the status of a martyr because he was killed for being an Indian."

Khanna, who has filed complaints with International Human Rights Council, said, "There are reports of gross human rights violations in Pakistan jails, like conversions, besides other things. Apart from prisoners of war and fishermen, there are hundreds of Indians locked up there after they crossed over to Pakistan from Afghanistan. These are young people who sought to go to other countries in an unauthorized manner, but found themselves stuck in countries like Iran, Iraq and Afghanistan."
