Pak expatriates pour in Rs20m for flood-hit across Sindh
DUBAI: The Pakistani community in the UAE has pledged to donate Rs20 million to fund relief operations in aid of flood victims in their home country who have been reeling under the devastation wreaked by torrential rains and subsequent floods.
The pledge of support came in response to the appeal made by Pakistan Senate Chairman Farooq H. Naik in Dubai late on Friday.
President of Pakistan United Forum Noor-Ul-Hassan Tanvir announced a donation of Rs10 million for Senate Emergency Relief Account on behalf of his community organisation, while Rs10 million was pledged by other members of the community in the UAE.
Naik is currently in the UAE leading a team of a dozen members of the Senate who have been busy attending various fund-raising events in aid of relief effort being carried out in the Pakistani province of Sindh. Earlier, the visiting team of Senators attended a dinner reception hosted by Javed Malik, former Ambassador-at-Large of Pakistan.
Addressing the gathering at a Flood Donation event organised by Pakistan United Forum in Dubai, Naik said that it was the hallmark of great nations that they face calamities with courage and fortitude. In the face of the many natural disasters that have hit Pakistan over the years, its people have proved that they are a brave nation, fully capable of overcoming all crises.
Elaborating on the enormity of the disaster back home, he said that more than 8.9 million people hailing from 11 districts of Sindh had to bear the brunt of the unusual and unprecedented rainfall which had caused 392 deaths, injured 746 people, and damaged as many as 700,000 houses. More than 89,000 cattle had perished and entire infrastructure comprising facilities related to health, education, and transportation, including schools, hospitals and roads, had been completely wiped out.
Meeting the daunting challenges posed by the devastating floods on both socio-economic and human fronts is a huge undertaking and certainly beyond the capacity of any single nation, he added.
Naik appreciated the role of the UAE government, the UAE Red Crescent and other UAE welfare organisations.
He said that the senators have contributed Rs15 million in Senate Emergency Relief Fund A/c No. 01-200-1321-5 which was matched by the same amount donated by the Chamber of Commerce.
The Senate chairman said that he and his team would start visiting the affected areas from Wednesday and distribute the relief goods directly. He assured that relief would be provided to all without discrimination on the basis of political, religious and caste leanings, and every single penny would be spent on the people affected by the floods.
Pakistans ambassador to the UAE Jamil Ahmed Khan also urged the Pakistani expatriates living in the UAE and all over the world to come forward with their generous support for their brethren in this difficult hour.
Earlier, Senator Abdul Nabi Bangash, Senator Babar Ghori, Senator Azam Swati, Senator Kalsoom Perveen, Senator Seemi Siddique and President of Pakistan Peoples Party-Punjab, Imtiaz Safdar Warriach called upon the Pakistani community to contribute wholeheartedly to the Senate Emergency Relief Account. They emphasised that the support of Pakistani expatriates would go a long way in helping the government to provide the much-needed relief to the affected masses.
