Pakistani community in Lambeth on the outskirts of London has pledged its support for the installation of a statue of well-known social reformer of Karnataka Basaveshwara in front of the British parliament.
The Pakistani community led by Toaha Queshi, MBE, has presented a petition in this regard to the Lambeth's full council meeting.
Neeraj Patil, the immediate past Mayor of Lambeth, who had taken the initiative to instal the statue, said last night that the "support from Pakistani community is significant as it represents cooperation between the Indian and Pakistani communities. The relations between the two nations have always been fragile but crucial to securing peace in the region."
Queshi, who was honoured by the Queen for promoting community cohesion and tackling extremism among young people in January 2010, said: "Basaveshwara is significant to both Pakistan and India. Before 1947, the two were one nation, a nation that Basaveshwara's actions changed profoundly.
"It is important that there is a statue in recognition of a selfless person who sought to bring democratic change to the region. At a time when relations between our two countries is of worldwide importance, it is crucial that we acknowledge our shared past. Therefore, I am proud to offer my full support to this initiative."
The plans for a statue of Basaveshwara are currently awaiting approval from Lambeth Council.
