ISLAMABAD:

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) led government has decided to offer China to lay oil pipeline from Gwader to Western China – a move that will allow the latter to diversify and safeguard its crude oil import routes, sources told The Express Tribune.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif would make a formal offer to his Chinese counterpart during his current visit to China. The government is expected to sign within a month an operational agreement with the brotherly nation to hand over Gwader Port to a Chinese company.

Officials said Pak-China oil pipeline could later be linked with Iran that had already offered to lay oil pipeline from its territory to Gwader to transport crude oil. During the PPP era, Iran had also announced to set up oil refinery at Gwader Port with 400,000 barrels per day oil production capacity.

“So, this proposal may become feasible after Chinese company takes operational control of Gwader Port,” official said adding that Gwader Port is quite near to Persian Gulf through which nearly 40% of world’s oil supply flow is maintained.

Officials maintained that 50% of total oil demand of China is met from imports that come from Middle East. At present supply line to China runs over 10,000 kilometre Dubai-Shanghai-Urumqi ocean route.

“The crude oil processed and refined at Gwader Oil Refinery can be exported and transported to Urumqi through the shortest possible route to China via Dubai-Gwader-Urumqi which is about 3600 kilometres. For this a oil pipeline will be laid through the envisaged Energy Corridor up to Western China via KKH/Khunjrab bypass,” officials said.

They said that impediments like high altitude, freezing temperature and difficult terrain could be overcome through certain technological advancements since many countries had successfully completed such pipeline projects under extreme conditions and high altitude such as ATACAMA gas pipeline, Trans-Alkaska Pipeline, Trans-Asia Gas pipeline etc.

Its a good development as I heard Pakistan and China have signed proper agreement for fibre optic link b/w Isl and kasghar which will have far reaching implications in connecting us , rail and road link that can operate through out year and now to add this pipeline as well is going to make things much more sweeter for Pak-china while very unpleasant for enemies in east and across atlantic .
Though many analysts were saying for years that a pipeline is on the cards as well but this is the first time that an official source confirmed this .

Iran would love to be a part of this project as well and it makes sense now why China has been recently trying to establish good relations with China offering badly needed foreign reserves to Iran .

The cheapest oil route will win over the shortest. It is not the length of the route buts its economics that will win every time.

Mate I work in oil industry and can tell you that at an average an oil tanker carrying 300000 tonne of crude oil charges 40000 dollar a day though it fluctuates with market demand . Now from arabian gulf till china it takes around 12-14 days meaning 600000 dollars for 300000 tonnes and that too in 14 days while a pipeline can transfer that amount in two days and the actual expenditure which includes pumps would be hardly a few thousand dollars used to run those pumps.

So a pipeline is hundred times cheaper and thats the reason we see so many pipelines for both gas and oil being built around the globe these days .

Capital cost is there but that amount can be recovered in few years alone and then its gonna be a win-win situation for coming ages as long as oil is used as a fuel or is available .

So what would be the capital cost of an all-season earthquake-proof pipeline across the Karakorums? And what happens if it leaks into the River Indus water basin? Any thoughts on that Sir?

Mian sahib is stressing very much on a economic corridor, Kashgar track and all those fancy things with China through the Karakorum...let's see if it is true!

India's opposition means nothing. While the US has weight, they can't stop this anymore than they can stop a falling meteor. Unless they are going to war, which they won't.

At this point, they will defend against China if attacked, but they won't be the first to strike, unless something crazy happens, and this pipeline is not one of them.

They also can't sanction China, as the nations that will listen, have too much interests for them to give up, not to mention, the US itself.

As to the UAE, yea, maybe in the world club football they mean something, but in the international game of politics, they may as well not exist.

The primary oil supply route for china is through Indian Ocean > Malacca Straight> South China sea, which is strategically venerable for china. [Consider Indian Navy base at Andaman Islands and US Nave presence at South China sea]. Getting a high capacity Oil & Gas Corridor through Pakistan to west china means reduced dependency on sea oil route, which will take china to a much strong strategic position in case of any regional conflict (specially with India). Honestly speaking, If I were the Chinese Chief, I would get this opportunity at any cost.:woot:

Furthermore, The oil and gas route through Pakistan could be more economic than the sea route in the long run. :china:
