I corroborates with the initial report that US was fully prepared to take down any aerial or ground based threat to the mission helis and were ready to enter Pakistan's air-space had the situation demanded. Those AWACs were also part of the mechanism to jam (rather feed false images) to Pakisstani raders.

They were detected before the so called jamming of Pakistani raders began.

Pretty much. I'd have expected a few F-22's flying despite the grounding of the majority, but hey maybe they thought F-18's were enough if things went pear shaped...
