The Sindh Assembly on Tuesday unanimously passed a private resolution urging the government to implement a quota of jobs for the residents of rural areas.
The resolution, moved by Ghulam Mujadid Isran of the PPP, said: This Assembly resolves that the provincial government ensure 60/40 percent ratio of quota in appointments and promotions of employees in government departments as well as autonomous bodies.
Isran said a quota of 60 percent of government jobs for rural areas had not been implemented, and unemployment there had increased manifold as a result.
He claimed that due promotions of officials belonging to rural areas had also been ignored. When their turn for promotion came, officials were allegedly issued with show-cause notices in a bid to block their promotions, the PPP legislator said.
MQM parliamentary leader Syed Sardar Ahmed said that this was a general principle adopted by the government, under which jobs should be given.
Law Minister Ayaz Soomro complained that the province had been subjected to step-motherly treatment since the creation of the country. He said officials working in the federal government tended to get promotions regularly while officials working in the Sindh government were deprived of them.
