KARACHI/ISLAMABAD: Owais Ali Shah, kidnapped son of Sindh High Court Chief Justice Sajjad Ali Shah reunited with his family on Tuesday, 29 days after he was kidnapped from a shopping centre in Clifton.

Owais Ali Shah, who appeared to be in good health, was transferred to his residence amid strict security. He appeared briefly in front of the media but did not speak.

His father Sajjad Ali Shah said that he had received a phone call from Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Shareef this morning informing him that his son had been recovered. “I asked him to let me speak to him briefly and he was kind enough to comply my request,” he said.

He thanked the Pakistan Army for recovering his son. He added that when his son was kidnapped the Army Chief called him and said that he will personally monitor the case.

Celebration broke out outside Owais Ali Shah’s residence with some people distributing sweets in the neighbourhood.

Recovered in an operation at Tank

DG ISPR Gen Asim Bajwa in a tweet said that Owais had been recovered from Tank, an area near South Waziristan where Pakistan's security forces have battled local and foreign militants.
He added that an operation in the area was conducted over intelligence reports. In the operation three terrorists were gunned down.

Sources said that terrorists had planned to transfer Owais Ali Shah to Afghanistan. Security forces stopped a blue car during snap checking when terrorists inside opened fire. In the shootout which followed three terrorists were gunned down. The source added that Owais Ali Shah was recovered in the car wearing a 'shuttlecock burqa'.

Owais Ali Shah was transferred in an aircraft to Karachi.

The Army Chief General Raheel Shareef congratulated security and intelligence agencies over the successful operation.

Not the first high profile kidnapping

Owais Ali Shah was kidnapped from a super market in Clifton on June 21 by men in plainclothes.

The country has seen high profile kidnapping of Shahbaz Taseer, son of former Punjab governor late Salman Taseer, and Ali Haider Gilani, son of former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani before the abduction of Awais Shah over the last fiver years.

Taseer was held in captivity for four and a half years before being recovered from Kuchlak, Balochistan in March this year, while Gilani was recovered after three years during an operation jointly carried out by US and Afghan forces in Ghazni district of Afghanistan in May.

Soldiers rescued Awais Ali Shah from his Taliban captors on Tuesday, after finding him bound in chains with his mouth taped shut and wearing in an all-enveloping burqa to hide his identity, the army spokesperson said.

Awais Shah, the son of Sindh provincial Chief Justice Sajjad Ali Shah, was kidnapped from outside a supermarket in the southern port city of Karachi on June 21. Shah was found in the backseat of a car in a town bordering the northwestern tribal areas.

Army spokesperson General Asim Bajwa said three ‘terrorists’ were killed during the rescue, adding that the kidnappers belonged to a splinter faction of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

Briefing the media hours after Awais Shah was recovered in an intelligence based operation conducted by the Pakistan army, DG ISPR Lt-Gen Asim Bajwa said, “TTP splinter group and al Qaeda elements were involved in his kidnapping.”

Bajwa said Awais Shah was recovered from his kidnappers who had made him wear a burqa in order to transport him around Dera Ismail Khan. Delving into details regarding Shah’s recovery, Bajwa said an ambush was foiled in Dera Ismail Khan at an intersection on the way to Tank.

Bajwa told reporters the operation took place at approximately 2:00am near the town of Tank, when the kidnappers were transporting Shah, possibly with a view to transferring him to Afghanistan.

Tank, a town in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on the border with the South Waziristan tribal area, is approximately 885 km (550 miles) north of Karachi.

Mufti Mehmood Chowk has three different entry points which we covered in its entirety, he continued. “Intelligence was in the lead of the operation.”

“An FC wing was also deployed on one of the routes,” the DG ISPR said. Going into further details, DG ISPR said, “A blue coloured vehicle was seen approaching and a soldier attempted to stop the car but the driver tried to escape on the dual carriageway.”

“The driver was shot and died on the spot after which the car came to a halt,” he added.

“Forces approached the car and questioned the person inside the vehicle was wearing a burqa” Bajwa told mediamen. “When no response was heard, the veil was lifted and his mouth was taped and hands and feet chained,” he continued. He then provided details of his identity and he was taken to safety, he added.

The ISPR chief said all three terrorists were killed.

“The operation was only completed this morning and Awais hasn’t been debriefed yet,” said Bajwa.

“Whatever high profile kidnappings they did, they had a purpose. They wanted to spread terror,” said Bajwa, referring to kidnappings of Ali Haider Gilani, Shahbaz Taseer and Awais Shah.

“I want to salute the affected families. They have faced this challenge with perseverance, and ultimately all three cases were recovered.”

Security forces rescued Awais Shah, a lawyer himself, in a raid, the DG ISPR announced in a tweet in the early hours of Tuesday.

“Awais Shah son of Sindh Chief Justice recovered through an IBO (intelligence based operation) from custody of terrorists from near Tank, 3 terrorists killed,” Pakistan Army spokesman Lieutenant General Asim Bajwa said on Twitter.

Television footage showed Shah reunited with his family at their Karachi home. Shah’s father said he did not know which group kidnapped his son.

“I don’t know anything other than that my child has been returned to me,” he said.

Shah was last seen in a CCTV footage on June 21 shopping at a supermarket in Karachi’s Defence Housing Society, an upscale neighbourhood.
