Dhaka South City Corporation mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh has said all overhead cables in the capital will be removed by November this year.

"Cable operators will start working to lay the cables underground from tomorrow," the mayor said on Sunday.

Earlier on October 12, the Internet Service Provider Association of Bangladesh (ISPAB) announced a countrywide shutdown of the Internet, data connectivity and associated services from October 18, from 10am to 1pm, daily, to press home their demands including withdrawal of the decision of removing overhead cables.


The service providers – ISPAB and Cable Operators Association of Bangladesh (COAB) – claimed that the Dhaka South City Corporation started removing overhead cables from all roads in August to beautify the city without serving any prior notice to internet service providers and cable TV operators.


In the last two months, ISPAB and COAB members have faced an estimated loss of Tk20 crore due to the removal of cables, the organisations claimed.


On October 17, The ISPAB and the COAB postponed their countrywide three-hour daily strike that was supposed to start today following a meeting with the Posts and Telecommunication Minister Mustafa Jabbar and State minister for ICT Division Zunaid Ahmed Palak.

However, they will further decide regarding the matter after a meeting with Dhaka South City Corporation officials, which is scheduled to be held today.

Currently, around 85 lakh out of 10.80 crore internet subscribers in the country use broadband internet connections.

Well, let's start with a little background, for the past month, both DSCC and DNCC have been cutting overhead cables belonging to internet service providers and cable TV operators, inadvertently disconnecting people's connections, causing losses to the operators and ruining millions of dollars worth of imported fibre optic cables.



The cables are illegal sure, but that's the norm in Bangladesh, given that they don't have anywhere else to move the cables and to move the cables underground, they need prior permission from the CCs to dig the road sides.


Anyhow, DSCC and DNCC have been cutting the cables without any prior notice, which has put the service providers in difficult position.



On the 12th of this month, The Internet Service Providers Association of Bangladesh (ISPAB) and The Cable Operators Association of Bangladesh (COAB) came to a decision that they would turn off their services for 3 hours everyday starting 18th, in the afternoon btw during rush hour.



This would harm students taking online classes and financial institutions such as banks among other offices and institutions.

It had the intended effect, the government panicked, so yesterday all parties reached an agreement to put an end to plan of daily 3 hours outages, in return the CCs would stop cutting the cables.



They also had some more demands, namely moving the cables underground alongside the following

“They also demanded installation of "last mile cable" following the on-the-spot approval by a committee consisting representatives of the ISPAB, the COAB, Bangladesh, Telecommunication Regulatory Commission, Nationwide Telecommunication Transmission Network (NTTN) and city corporations.”




Anyway, DSCC has reached an agreement with ISPAB and COAB, cables will be moved underground shortly. I suspect DNCC will follow suit.

No amount of 'andolon' will work when Taposh passes orders.

He is a relatively powerful person (one of Sheikh Moni's sons) and the Mayor of Dhaka South. Quite qualified too - unlike the rest of the uneducated idiots like Obaidul Quader. He is a Barrister at law and graduated from the Lincoln's Inn.
