Over 93,000 candidates, including 3,700 PhD holders apply for peon job in UP
As Narendra Modi government and opposition fight over 'jobs crisis' in India, another surprising news has come from Uttar Pradesh where over 93,000 candidates including Phd holders, post graduates have applied for peon jobs that have an eligibility of Class V.

According to a ToI report, 3,700 PHDs holders, 50,000 graduates, 28,000 PGs have applied for 62 posts of messengers in UP police. The post requires a minimum eligibility of Class V.

The selection for the job requires just a self declaration that the candidate knows how to ride bicycle. However, considering the large number of over-qualified applicants, the department has now decided to conduct a selection test for the posts that have been lying vacant for last 12 years.

According to a official, the department is thinking include basic reasoning, few questions to test general knowledge of the candidates and some basic mathematics to test the basic skills of the candidates in the selection exam. "The job is like that of a postman's and the person has to deliver police telecom department's messages from one office to the other," a police department official told ToI.

Besides job surety, 'high starting salary'is one of the reasons why the post has attracted so much attention. The starting salary for the post is Rs 20,000 per month.

While one act of job desperation cannot explain the big picture, it certainly can point at the problem of jobs in the country. Recently there were reports that over 2 crore youths applied for nearly 1 lakh jobs in Indian Railways, while over two lakh candidates applied for 1,100 constable jobs in Mumbai Police earlier this year. The candidates include doctors, lawyers and engineers.

Similarly, in Rajasthan, 129 engineers, 23 lawyers, one chartered accountant and 393 post graduates were interviewed for jobs of peons.

People kill for a government job here because once you get it, you don't need to worry about even working properly. It is lifelong free pay and facilities and no accountability (unless you did some major scandal).

don't make excuses.
No person with higher qualification will do these small jobs in subcontinent.
They apply even for such small jobs after years of unemployment and lost of all hopes. You will understand if you think like the PHD applying for such small job. He would have dreamed of higher pays and never even thought that he would be forced to apply for such small scale job.

Well, The Real Answer is This :

1. In UP There are FAKE FAKE FAKE Degrees and Its Super Easy to get these Degrees ( Non Technical )
2. Its As Easy as getting a ( Fake ) Domicile for Kasab or even Imran Khan ! Just Pay rs. 60 ( Exact Amount ) and Get your Domicile within 12 Hours.

Its All About Money. Thats It.

No You are NOT Sad.

But Let me Give you something to reduce your 'Sadness' , The Degrees of "Non Technical" Courses are Very very very easy to get in UP. Just get Enrolled... Pass the Time.... Bingo.. Degree in Hand !!

A "Technical" Degree from NIT , IIT , IISc. is Much Much Much Different when compared to a Ph.D. from a Third Grade Private Owned Degree College.

No wonder these were "Fake" Ph D. Holders.

What the heck are you talking about?

People make shit load of money in bribery in so-called peon jobs.

Low-grade job indeed but a venue to make boat-load of money through other opportunities.

Dude, you need to understand the structure of Uttar Pradesh as a state. The state is primarily agrarian with over 40 years of the most pathetic form of corruption you can see. Sectarian politics (more than religious poltics, yes) is what has been calling shots for so many years. The corruption you see in any part of Pakistan is lets say 1/10th of what this state has seen. So much so that every other state in the country considers "UP-level corruption" as a negative benchmark.

Mayawati and Mulayam had destroyed the state in all these years. Crime has been rampant and "chieftainism" is a big problem; the guy with biggest group of goons has been considered a 'role model' in the state by the people. Basically 'might is right' logic.

For generations, the state has seen corruption like nothing in state government departments. Coal for power plants has been locked away due to intentional bureaucratic hurdles, industry investors are asked so much bribe and are faced with so many threats from different political factions that they were scared to even enter the state.

Majority of the state for many decades depended on government jobs for earning their money and also depending on "other" means. Those who are straightforward would maybe have a bookstore or some other small business to supplement their government salaries. Those other would actually use bribery, political contacts and illegal land and property to make money and in tonnes.

In such a state where:
  • Investors have been shit scared to enter due to law and order issues for over 3 decades
  • There is no progress on infrastructure
  • government officers ask for crazy bribes
  • "might is right" with no straigforward means to success
  • Population is more than entire USSR countries combined
Government jobs with guaranteed employment till retirement, excellent perks, minimal work and opportunities to make more money through illicit means is a huge, huge lucrative opportunity. Mind you, UP-ites are very street smart (a little too much maybe) and less on the innovation/entrepreneurial side.

In short, your peon position isn't a typical peon; it is a 'window of money making' in UP. :D

For a second I thought you are talking about Sind govt. All you said might be true and if so then those who are applying for a money making job must also no that these jobs dont come with application but there are other means of getting these jobs.

The first step is through formal application; unless you appear for the exams and then use 'connections' to be selected, nothing happens.

It will definitely help the functionality and progress of the departments with highly educated Peons. on the other hand, Starting from clerk to top management will be BA Pass.

Good Step. Peon are the face of any office..
