New Delhi: Over 4 lakh Indians will die before they receive a green card to the United States, a new report has said, adding that over 11 lakh applications from Indians are pending in US's employment-based green card backlog.

A green card or a Permanent Resident Card is a document issued to US immigrants granting them permanent residence in the country.

Indian makes up 63% of the total 18 lakh employment-based green-card applications now pending in the country, US-based think tank Cato Institute said in its report. This backlog adds to the 83 lakh pending applications from the family-sponsored system.

According to the report, for new applicants from India, the backlog is effectively "a life sentence" with over 134 years of wait time. "About 424,000 employment-based applicants will die waiting, and over 90 percent of them will be Indians. Given that Indians are currently half of all new employer-sponsored applicants, roughly half of all newly sponsored immigrants will die before they receive a green card," it said.

While US employs a significant number of Indians and Chinese for STEM roles, only seven per cent of employment-based green cards can go to individuals from a country annually. This puts Indian at a significant disadvantage with over half of the backlog for employees of US businesses with advanced degrees including highly-skilled STEM professionals and US-educated graduates.

Long green card wait time has become a slow-brewing crisis in the US which has now left Indian applicants in a constant state of limbo despite efforts by the current Biden administration and initiatives by Indian-American lawmakers.

Post a comment "These astounding backlogs and massive waits underscore that legal immigration to the United States is nearly impossible. Even to get to the point of entering the backlog takes an enormous amount of good fortune, and the lucky few that make it through the labyrinth face the daunting prospect of never actually receiving green cards in decades or even their lifetimes," the report said.

I hope they get it or they should outrightly rejected. Both cases it would be good for India. A lot of these people work as IT professionals, doctors, architects etc, make a lot of money yet they keep the money locked in US for a perceived future here. If for once US says, that it doesn't intend to extend GC's to these people. There will be a remittance boom to India like never seen before. I wouldn't be surprised if US alone will be sending India a $100 billion if not more.

How does it effect their lives? They can't make permanent decisions like owning homes and property. And getting married and having kids. Their loyalty will be shifting from one to another as time goes by.

Most H1B’s with a sub standard B.tech from a regional private college shouldn’t get one.

Poor souls will have to wait all their lives to get out of India.

It's a straight forward decision.

Either rot in Modi's India or have a semblance of a decent life in the US.

No contest.

Even industrialists who had $billions split India to settle abroad.

This guy ring a bell?

One more lie. I am a us citizen living in India on and off for 16 years. Most of my cousins who had green cards have come back to settle down in India.
