BEIJING, May 8 (Xinhua) -- More than 308 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines had been administered across China as of Friday, the National Health Commission said Saturday.
The new tally came as worldwide COVID-19 cases passed 150 million and Asia emerges as the hardest-hit region.
China has been promoting vaccination among the public to build an immune barrier.
During the five-day May Day holiday, which ended on Wednesday, the government took measures to ensure people got their due shots on schedule.
On Friday, the World Health Organization (WHO) approved for emergency use a Chinese COVID-19 vaccine, making it the sixth vaccine to receive WHO validation for safety, efficacy and quality.
"Despite vaccines representing some light at the end of the tunnel, there is still a long way to go for the world to rein in the virus," said Wu Zunyou, chief epidemiologist with the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
A worldwide immunity barrier may not be achieved in the short term as inoculation rates in many countries and regions remain relatively low, according to a recent alert released by the center, which noted that self-protection measures are still very important. Enditem

Good for China. Many other countries in the world are not seeing it efficient because of it's efficacy. Chile and Turkey is the biggest example. I believe people will not go for it even if given free because everyone is feared of Covid and want to get a shot of vaccine which is having at least 80% efficacy. Better to go for Sputnik or Az or home made vaccine.

Deaths are still stuck at around 100 a day when they should have fallen much further from combination of lockdown since April and all vulnerable have been jabbed with 2 doses since weeks ago.

Sputnik, Pfizer, AstraZeneca all have their efficacy verified by mass vaccinations in US, Israel, UK and Hungary.

Unfortunately the Chinese vaccines so far are not showing similar efficacy.

Number of people who get Covid after getting the vaccination will be of most importance in Chile. That number will show the effectiveness of the vaccine and how many of those get actually hospitalized and Died.

Did anyone deny the Chinese vaccine does not work?

I want to go with Chilean real-world data that shows 3% efficacy after 1 dose and 50-60% after 2 doses as that is the best we have right now.

This compares with UK data that shows roughly 70-75% efficacy after one dose and 70-80% after 2 doses of AstraZeneca.

I think it is not just the double dose efficacy that was the problem in Chile and Turkey but more primarily the near zero efficacy of the single dose Chinese vaccine.

If the Chinese vaccines were say more like AstraZeneca where nearly all the protection comes from a single dose, then both Chile and Turkey would be in much better places right now.

Yes, Chile and Turkey would be in a much worse position without the Chinese vaccines but they would be in a BETTER position if they went with either Pfizer or AstraZeneca for sure.

China has created an EFFECTIVE vaccine for sure according to WHO standards but the problem is that others in the West and Russia(Hungary real-world data) have created BETTER vaccines.

Hope this clarifies my position and no-one is in any doubt that I am out to bash China for the sake of it.
