The French government on Friday provoked outrage by banning protests against Israeli action in Palestine, becoming the first country in the world to do so.

This week, thousands of protesters took to the streets of Paris to demonstrate against the rising death toll in the latest conflict between Gaza militants and the Israeli army.

However, the decision to ban the demonstrations was justified, according to Bernard Cazeneuve, the French interior minister, as protests last weekend had led to violence.

I cannot accept a repetition [of these acts of violence] and I cannot take the risk of seeing French citizens, whatever their religious affiliations, exposed to violence,” Cazeneuve told reporters, the website of TV channel France 24 reported on Friday.

Cazeneuve fears there might be a repeat of the fights between “ultra” Jewish vigilantes and pro-Palestinians which occurred after a demonstration last Sunday.

Referring to the main Paris march, Cazeneuve said: “I consider that the conditions are not right to guarantee security.”

The minister added that there was a “threat to public order,” while opponents said he was “criminalizing” popular support of the Palestinian people.

Michele Sibony, of the Jewish Union for Peace, said: “By outlawing free speech by pro-Palestinian demonstrators, France puts itself in a unique position in the world and Europe,” the UK newspaper the Daily Mail reported.

‘Beyond belief’
Sylvie Perrot, another pro-Palestine Paris-based activist, commented: ‘Fascist states stop people demonstrating against wars – it is beyond belief that French Socialists are following their example.”

Youssef Boussoumah, of the Party of the Indigenous of the Republic (PIR) said: “France is criminalizing any show of solidarity with the Palestinian people... This is an absolute outrage.”

Late on Friday, lawyers for a number of groups hoping to campaign on behalf of Palestine lodged an appeal against the ban in a Paris court.

Violators of the ban face a year in prison and a $20,000 fine, while if they hide the faces to conceal their identity the sentence can go up to three years and a $60,000 fine.

. . .
I think there were numerous protests in France today
Yes exactly.
Indeed "préfecture" only forbids in Paris ... but still it occured ... the reason is the last one in Paris (instead of all of the other in France and world) have been very very violent. People have complained that a few people from both sides have used violence .

. . .
western freedom of speech ...
it has nothing to do with freedom of speech

they have a simple rule here for such gathering :

when you want gathering/do a protest , you HAVE to ask "préfecture" (local authority):
the reason is that they decide with you WHEN and WHERE you can do it ...
then the local authority is responsible and prepares the place: the time and the streets the people cross: the police should protect the people who protest/gather

they can say no if they have a good reason: security

since last time the people who organized did NOTHING (in PAris only because everywhere else it was ok) to avoid the violence which occured during a long time between pro Israel and pro Palestine, they decided to say
"no not now. we don't say you that we allow it . now it is your own responsability"

and when it is own responsability then CRS , police come there ... and if they see that the gathering is really risky
or some elements use violence , they totally avoid the protest
and it was what happened in Paris: a few guys used violence since the beginning

.
western freedom of speech ...

Not at the expense of public order and safety!

If some nutheads decide to use those protests to target certain religious groups (Jews!) the government cannot allow this to happen.

Any democratic nation has to protect the rule of law and the safety of all its citizens!

. . . .
I don't agree with this ban personally but ever since the widespread riots in 2005 (mostly concentrated in the outskirts of Paris but also in other major French cities such as Lyon, Marseille etc. to name a few) the authorities have been wary of any wide-scaled protests. Security should come before such kind of protests.

Besides such wide-scaled protests like in most countries in Europe must be reported to the local authorities beforehand so the police can secure the protestors, observers and the public area that the protest is going to take place in.

I have no doubt that this decision is going to be overturned in court. It has no legal merit, and can't stand up to scrutiny.
