Today, we honor Major Bilal Rana, who sacrificed his life in the Chandpur sector on the night of December 7-8, 1971, at just 27 years old.

He was the SSG soldier who arrested Sheikh Mujeeb on March 25, 1971. Later, he volunteered to stay behind with a few soldiers to cover a retreating Pakistan army column. They defended a 5-mile line against thousands of Mukhti Bhanis for three days. Despite the odds, he refused to surrender.

The Indian Air Force eventually attacked his position, and he was killed in action at age 27. Major Bilal is buried in an unmarked grave in Dhaka, and Bangladesh has refused to return his remains. Pervez Musharraf named his son Bilal in his honor.
