Our British Colleagues Lazy and Unwilling - Tata

There's a thing called 'commitment' Mr. Chogy and you, having been in the military, should be the first one to claim allegiance to that fact.

I would wager that any company that demands 16 hours a day for decades, isn't asking for commitment... they are asking for slavery.

I speak in general, not with regards to this person, this situation.

One must keep the big picture in mind... happiness comes not from material success, it comes from personal relationships, from loved ones, family and friends. Where do you place "Your company" in the following list?

- God
- Country
- Family

I'd suggest it is at the bottom. Remember the old (but very true) saying. No one has, as a tombstone epitaph - "I wish I had spent more time at work."

Find a balance. You can have it all, and not cheat your loved ones. And yes, there is a time for extreme commitment, like the military, but people know this when they join.

TATA is used to Indian management . For you its slavery , here its normal , infact if you question it , be prepared to lose your job or atleast forget about a promotion .No wonder the West is where it is .

no offence...but working 16 hours on a regular basis is a crazy idea...even I work for TATA..there may be times when I had to stay back late...on one particular incident,I had to stay back in the office for a whole 36 hours ..but these are special cases, kind of disaster management like thing, and I was duly paid for that...

As much as I respect Tata, this Indian logic of going to extra mile essentially means putting in a lot of unpaid hours or squeezing your workers to do it. What Mr Tata is advocating here is to play shrewed tricks to extract extra productivity out of engineering department. Yeah right, coming models of JLR will tell how much that "extra mile" is helping in improving product quality and image preception. Already the Saudi distributor for JLR has gone bust and the product has lost confidence in UAE which is basically the pinnacle of entire GCC motor market.

Through out my work life, I have been deeply annoyed either by Indian colleuges spoling the atmosphere by going that "extra mile" or Indian management demanding that "extra mile". As a rule of thumb I refused any job offer by a manager with high employe turn out or those using for of HR Junk like commitment and extra mile in conversation. They were sure shot signs of slavery minded managers.

If the company fails, its due to management decision not because of junior employes not committing the "extra mile". They are not paid in fat bonuses and stock options to begin with. The only people who should be squeezed for that extra mile is the management itself.

For a salaried employe, its straight 9-5 job..when the bell of 5PM rings its time to stop whatever at hand and rush for home.
The manager should sit and burn the night oil if they want their bonouses to get fatter each year.

Indian CEO riding on the wave of economic sucess have tendency to make absurd comments on world forums. Indian outsourcing boss, Vineet Nayar CEO of HCL also made absurd comments about American graduates being unemployable and his undertone clearly pointed towards American rejection of "enslaved employment".

Also work is worship is some real retarded BS..it simply means:

I am an incompetent sucker at my job so i will stay extra hours to suck up the manager c__k and gossip bad things about competent colleuges because they are a threat to my job security

From my interactions with working people , I have heard that the credit for the "extra Mile " put in by the junior employee--- as they call it , is almost always taken by the management , whereas in case of downsizing or cost-cutting ....the first in the line to get " laid off " is always the "hard-working " junior employee. They are the ones who get a "Raw deal " in the corporate world .

I think u do not have proper knowledge : TATA LTD is the first company in india which started 36 hours job hours in a week or im not confirm exactly but same as in west. if u will work in TATA then you can understand. TATA is most respectable company and many times represent national symbol. if you will work in TATA then you will feel that it is something more than money(I.e Since TATA stablish a steel company in Indian state Jharkhand there is no Strike since more than 40 years). Tata spend 30 % of its profit to local people and it is TATA LTD Policy whether it is America or Russia. And because of this Ratan tata is not in the list of world richest person.
But every second is payble in TATA. and Man just listen................. Iam using my bandwidth to reply you and this is also payble;)

Hey Chogy, don't get caught into anyone's impulsive piece of hatred. It will make you defensive without reason and you will end up defending the ground that is not even the point of topic.

First of all the topic is about the Brits, not the Americans. Majority of the Indians and Pakistanis club them both together under the vague term 'gora', meaning white/fair. Few over here know the difference between the professionalism practiced by the Americans and the Brits. I would advise you to see through such flaws and traps in the various posts before inadvertently defending an out of topic ground.

Secondly, Tata did not say that the workers should be forced to work beyond the specified times. The old man actually points out an example - He flies from India to Britain, and the members completely fail to appreciate those efforts, with such lack of respect that one cannot give mere one more hour of time to help the meeting be successful.

All he (Tata) is saying is that one should be more considerate toward one's profession to help the venture be a success. And that consideration is certainly lacking in this case.

Now about the Americans - Very few here know that when it comes to work ethics and professionalism, esp that of Senior Mangers, the Americans come among the top. It is less related to social security, and more to a progressive society. Contrary to the common perception that Americans are dumb, they are in fact among the smartest of all on this planet. And if the Americans were not so skillful and so professional, world's biggest businesses won't be originating from the US - a continuous phenomenon unhindered by growing per capita and social security.

And then you see the Brits, their businesses are failing one after another, and keep getting bought by outsiders. Growing number of richest there are the expats from other countries.

Lack of professionalism and not so high work ethics may not be the only causes, but they are indeed among the leading causes of their shrinking industrial base.

I always remember the email sent by Infosys head and which reached lot of young people here.

His point was simple working till late night doesn't mean adding value to the company or work. Browsing or time spent at coffee machine and chatting can be avoided which means work is completed by 5 or 6 pm.

Now add to this another side of the coin at times Indian management is very oblivious to the workers plight and he has to stay late because his job is dearer.

So 16 hours a day and unpaid involuntary overtime is standard and normal for TATA? And other Indian Companies? May I suggest the workers have been utterly brainwashed to allow such a situation to happen. Management uses words like "the extra mile", "strong commitment", "mission-critical" and other pseudo-military nonsense, trying to make people believe that unless they make more cars (or phones, or iPads, or potato peelers) and do it faster, they are doomed, the company is doomed, blah blah.

May I respectfully suggest forming a labor union?

No wonder the West is where it is .

You mean unparalleled worker productivity?

The typical extreme worker is a young college graduate, early 20's, fired up about their career and very ready and willing to show the boss-man how motivated they are. But if it continues, the price to be paid will be terrible. Money is colorful printed paper. But Time is a gift from God.

Some good "money" quotes.

Waste your money and you’re only out of money, but waste your time and you’ve lost a part of your life. —Michael Leboeuf

You have not lived a perfect day, even though you have earned your money, unless you have done something for someone who will never be able to repay you.—Ruth Smeltzer

It’s good to have money and the things that money can buy, but it’s good, too, to check up once in a while and make sure that you haven’t lost the things that money can’t buy. –George Horace Lorimer

coz JRL is nomore britsh , and probabaly British Colleagues won't like it to work for india...

I think you are taking his comments in wrong way... He is not talking about daily 16 hr working but based on situations when company need it. I have working experience of 2 places South Africa and USA. What I observed in US projects, when we were stuck up and need to push hard, All senior managers (who were Americans) came to office on weekends as well as stretched more while in SA, They didn't care about project deadlines very much and conitued there 7 to 4 work culture.. which in turn slowly replaced many SA members by either Indians or Philipinos.

I am currently working on 2 shifts for 2 weeks as it is demanding not only for my Project/Client/Company but also my fellow member who, after a hardwork is on leave. This is balance act and one has to do like posting anywhere my country demands.

The engineering department does not fall under management..so either you are defending nonsense or another blind patriotic bharti!

If Indian management was all that efficient, then not every US company touched by H1-B would be going bust, facing data theft law suits, theft of tech and patents, etc etc.
