Folks this great folk song is sung by Inayat Ali who is the elder brother and music teacher of famous Pakistani singer Shaukat Ali who is known as voice of Punjab. ( Inayat Ali & Shaukat Ali both hail from Malikwal Gujrat Pakistan )
"Challa" originated from banks of chanab river (indus river) in Gujrat Punjab ( fame city of Sohni Mahiwal ) now in Pakistan.
Challa is the story of father and son "Jhalla Malah" his son one day took his boat on river and never came back ( presumably drowned in river) "challa mourr kay naiy aaiya rona ummraan da paaiya"
Challa was written by owner of "nutonky theater" later called "Pakistan Theater" Fazal Shah aka (phaji Shah) music was composed by his wife "Amman Iqbal" and sung by their adopted son Aashiq Hussain Jatt and was released on LP by HMV in 1934.
In 70s Inayat Ali sung challa for radio Pakistan Lahore and became instant hit folk song later on challa is sung by many famous singer notably among them Gurdas Mann , Shaukat Ali.
