Opposition dismisses Qureshi’s appeal, Kerry to arrive

ISLAMABAD: While US Senator John Kerry is due to arrive in Pakistan on Sunday to address concerns on the controversial Kerry-Lugar Bill, opposition against the aid bill continued in the national assembly on Saturday.

Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi told reporters in Islamabad that the US administration has cleared all the apprehensions about the bill.

Qureshi defended the provisions of the Kerry-Lugar Bill in the parliament on Friday and urged politicians to hold the interest of the state above political gains.

Opposition parties protested the aid Bill inside and outside the parliament, despite FM Qureshi’s impassioned appeals.

‘We have rejected Kerry-Lugar bill in our party meeting. The Foreign Minister just delivered his speech but did not put the bill before the House. Had done presented it, I am sure it would have been voted out by the parliament,’ said a clearly upset PML-N leader Javed Hashmi.

The opposition is not satisfied with an explanatory note that has been attached to the bill by the US Administration as they still see it as an attempt by the US to interfere in Pakistan’s internal affairs.

‘I wanted to ask Mr Qureshi where he was when the bill was being drafted. It was a very long exercise. When criticism started they went back to DC, when the armed forces pointed out their reservations and certain flaws in the bill,’ remarked Senator Javed Ali Shah outside the Parliament House.

Criticism of the bill is expected to carry on despite government’s attempts to pacify the House.

The opposition is not satisfied with an explanatory note that has been attached to the bill by the US Administration as they still see it as an attempt by the US to interfere in Pakistan’s internal affairs.

This explanatory note is not the part of the bill. Secondly, the wording has not changed therefore the issue of language is still there. Conditions on Pakistan are much harder and would force Pakistan to testify by accepting this bill that it is infact Pakistan which has safe havens for terrorists. Afghanistan and India have been given priority on Pakistan.

I think the resistance of KLB is legitimate.

I believe that the PPP government has sold parts of Pakistan and are happily willing to negotiate its soveriegnty which can lead to alot of trouble for them as well as Pakistan in the future.

M Qureshi is the worst FN in Pak history. His speech in NA was totally emotional and baseless, extremely un impressive, hoping to deliver speech base on facts and discuss the disputable clauses of pact...but non . Zaradari appointed people are not aware of diplomatic norms and duties.

"Shah Mahmood Qureshi's relations with Haqqani had become very tense in the early part of this year. During Zardari's for AFPAK consultations, Qureshi and Haqqani had a shouting match because the ambassador had sent something to the president without going through the foreign minister. Haqqani had direct line to Zardari, and he had some of Qureshi's decisions reversed. After the Long March when Zardari became a little weaker and Yousaf Raza Gilani a bit stronger, Haqqani decided to patch up with Qureshi. What did Haqqani do: He used his contacts with Kerry and had Qureshi's son appointed as his intern. With that favour, Qureshi has no more complaints against Haqqani. So powerful is Haqqani that he has never allowed Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir to set foot in Washington.

Friend nor has any of the conditions changed in Pakistan.What is your army doing in waziristan is it not a part of Pakistan.So terrorist are there and so are the safe heavens.If so called non state actors were to act only within Pakistans boundaries why should India or Afghanistan have a issue.

The problem comes when they bred, buttered and exported as part of a anti India policy.Then you shy away from taking action on them citing lack of evidence.What evidence did you get suddenly against taliban........coz they have become too hot for comfort.

We have same issues, which you have. Our tribal areas are being distrubed. Mostly by Afghanistan and your missions in Afghanistan. Like you scream of insurgency being exported to you, the same trouble is with us. These people come from Afghanistan, all weapons, resources and blessings come from Afghanistan, thats our issue.

You also breed, butter and export insurgency to Pakistan what about that and still US deals India like a speacial treat. Nuclear Agreement with you people despite of 100 Extremist Movements. Whats this? This is our issue.

Thanks for your advice but we are awoken. Its time for u to wake up. Pakistan won't die without these 1.5 Billion $, let me tell you clearly. We Pakistanis if called can gather this amount. Its all about the Govt. which shys to call for help from Pakisanis and openly begs from outsiders.
