Efforts underway to engage Mullah Omar: Mushahid

Daily Times Monitor

LAHORE: Efforts are underway in Afghanistan to hold talks with Taliban leader Mullah Omar, Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid Secretary General Mushahid Hussain said on Friday.

Talking to Najam Sethi during the ‘Tonight with Najam Sethi’ programme on Dunya News, Mushahid said he had met an Afghan intellectual last week at the residence of former Jamaat-e-Islami leader Qazi Hussain Ahmed, who said he wanted to convene a grand Afghan jirga so that negotiations could be initiated with all factions of the Taliban.

Mushahid said the Afghan intellectual claimed that Saudi, German and Norwegian leadership were making efforts to constitute the jirga. Citing the intellectual, Mushahid said the process may be completed soon and the US was also expected to talk to Mullah Omar. Mushahid said the US administration first planned to destroy the Taliban infrastructure and then start negotiating with them.

Also present on the show was political analyst Hassan Askari Rizvi, who said Washington wanted the Taliban to realise that the US had the power to hurt them. He said the US believed that a potential dialogue process could be advanced if the Taliban became aware of the US deterrence capability against the Taliban. He said the US knew the dialogue would only be possible with support from the jirga, but Washington would not talk to the Taliban directly and would ask Hamid Karzai to initiate dialogue

It's an old post but digging it up nevertheless. So the HRCP had reported about mass graves (and i saw the posts in the thread about it but the discussion there has taken another colour altogether so don't want to spoil that) and all of you guys on the forum jumped in to trash the report.

My question is fairly simple to you all:

Where have the corpses of the 1700 Taliban killed gone? Does the army offer crematorial services that no trace can be found or the army has the niceness to dig a grave for each of the dead Taliban and bury them.

All of you think logically for a change:

a. The army killed 1700 Taliban and there are bound to be mass graves.

OR

b. The army's claim is wildly exaggerated and the Taliban have escaped.

What say you all now?

taliban bury their own !

b, exact figures will never be known but killed they were and yes have also escaped in the hills - there are still one or two pockets where militant activity is still going on. further hit and run tactics are still being employed by the militants - this will go on for a while - there is no shutting down of activity as yet!

and oh thanks for reminding us to think logically!

Most welcome for the last except the logical part was not for you, it was for all those cheetahs posting in that thread and their conclusions/arguments

And well the Taliban bury their own... so when the army killed them they obviously left them to rot for good. You people somehow just can't decide what you want you say when it comes to the army: killing over a thousand Talibans is a glorious feat but it doesn't mean you shun the atrocity of the act away. (and before anyone begins, I am not a Taliban supporter. Just against bloodshed.)

And yeah as for the "pockets of resistance", well have been following up with the news as best as one can. Somehow it's these "pockets of resistance" that become the flashpoints!!!

It's a war at the end of the day, crimes against humanity will take place, we should at least have the courage to admit or even entertain the possibility that law-upholders can be violaters as well

1700 of Taliban killed all over Swat during operations that went on for months does not require mass graves. Some bodies must've been mutilated in explosions, some buried in their own respective towns.

Furthermore if someone just goes and looks they'd probably find a lot of those bodies in Swat.

Pakistan foils suicide terror plot, minister says

updated 1 hour, 41 minutes ago

From Samson Desta

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (CNN) -- Pakistani forces in the last month foiled a planned attack on the parliament building, the intelligence agency and other federal institutions, the country's interior minister told CNN Sunday.
Pakistan's parliament building was one target of a planned attack, an official says.

Pakistan's parliament building was one target of a planned attack, an official says.

In the last four weeks, authorities arrested three men with suicide vests who were plotting to carry out the attacks, said Interior Minister Rehman Malik.

Malik would not say exactly when the men were caught.

Pakistan is in the midst of an intense military offensive against Taliban militants. The militants are suspected of launching attacks inside Pakistan and in neighboring Afghanistan from their haven in the mountainous tribal region along the northwestern border.

On Sunday, a suicide bomber in volatile northwestern Pakistan killed at three people and wounded 15 others, police said.

The bombing rocked the Pakistani city of Peshawar, capital of North West Frontier Province.

The incident took place when police approached a man acting suspiciously. The man ran away, police chased him and a gunfight ensued. The man ran out of bullets and blew himself up.

Two women and seven children were among the injured. Remains of the alleged attacker were found, police said. Five houses were destroyed.

The incident follows a car bombing on Saturday in Peshawar that killed two people, including the spokesman for an extremist group called Ansar ul Islam. Two suspects are in custody.

Malik said Sunday the government's anti-Taliban operations will continue during Ramadan, the Muslim holy month considered to be a time of peace.

Militants in North Waziristan, part of the tribal region, have said they will observe a unilateral ceasefire throughout the month.

"There will not be a ceasefire during Ramadan. We are not interested in a ceasefire," Malik said. "They haven't kept their commitment in the past. We will continue targeted actions against the Taliban."

Malik also said the Taliban killed the father-in-law of its leader Baitullah Mehsud and several other relatives, accusing them of leaking information about his whereabouts.

Pakistan and U.S. officials contend Mehsud was killed in an August 5 drone attack in Waziristan at his father-in-law's house.

The Taliban claims Mehsud is alive but ill.
