India has launched a major offensive against insurgents in its central Chhattisgarh state.
Chhattisgarh has been the epicenter of violence between Maoist fighters, security forces and pro-government militias since 2005.
Officials say the small amount of resistance from some of the Maoist strongholds could be a ploy.
[S. R. P. Killuri, Police Deputy Inspector General]:
As of today, Operation Green Hunt is underway in districts like Bijapur and Dantewada. According to the information we have, the police are not facing any resistance in the interior areas of the Maoist strongholds. It may be an operational tactic of the Maoists; we are still discussing this issue with our officers."
Maoist violence has spread to almost one third of Indias 602 districts, and has been declared the countrys single biggest internal security threat.
Insurgent violence accounts for an estimated 600 to 700 deaths annually and the displacement 100,000 civilians.
