One of seven coast guard crew members was killed on Aug. 17 when a coast guard boat capsized off Istanbul’s Bosphorus after crashing into a dry cargo vessel heading toward the Black Sea.

The SG-25 coast guard boat crashed into the dry cargo vessel M/V Tolunay off the Sarayburnu shore at 8.20.

Private Sinan Göktaş was killed in the accident while the other six crew members were rescued. The vessel headed north to the Black Sea on its course after the accident.

Istanbul Governor Vasip Şahin had earlier announced that five crew members were rescued while another was still missing.

The rescue team initially managed to rescue three crew members from the boat. Another two were also rescued and received initial treatment on sea ambulance.

Two crew members, identified as Mehmet Nuri Karaca and Ayhan Akgönül, landed at the Harem disembarkation boat station and transferred to the Gülhane Military Hospital. They are in a stable condition.

Traffic in Bosphorus, a key international shipping lane for oil and grain, was suspended after the accident.

More than 3 percent of the global crude supply, mainly from Russia and the Caspian Sea, passes through the 17-mile Bosphorus that connects the Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara.
