Nope. That was according to Sheikh Mujib.
According to unofficial sources, it is stated that the Indians along with the AL leadership concluded that 300,000 people were killed in the war. When Mujib came to speak, he mistakenly (assumed) said that "Three million of my people were killed."
The Indian officials were stunned.
Unfortunately, that three million is taken officially by many Bangladeshis.
Overall, Mujib was not a bad guy. His biggest mistake was that he made friends and alliances with a lot of bad people. And that continues to influence the AL today. Even actual war criminals actively serve in the AL today.
Mujib was certainly an enigmatic character.
As far as the numbers go, we can't say anything conclusive since the data can be biased. And during the 40 years of existence of Bangladesh, no work has been done to conclude or establish actual facts. There are two main factors in this:
1. Cold War-era complexities.
2. Lack of political will from the Bangladeshi leadership.
Now, I would support today's Bangladesh taking responsibility for the crimes against Biharis and others, and support their rights just as any minority in Bangladesh. But that'll have to wait for a some time. And not going to happen as long as today's Awami League is around.
Perhaps I am being Utopian(?)
In the end, the whole thing might actually be forgotten. And both Bangladesh and Pakistan work on their respective destinies.
