A meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) held at UN headquarters in New York on Monday unanimously approved a Pakistani proposal to bring into greater focus the plight of Myanmar’s persecuted Rohingya Muslims in a bid to give a push to efforts aimed at restoring their human rights.

The ambassadors’ meeting discussed the situation of the beleaguered Rohingya community at the request of Pakistan’s Ambassador to the UN, Maleeha Lodhi, who opened the discussion by underscoring the urgency of the issue and the need to evolve a “collective response to this great tragedy.”

Kuwait’s Ambassador to the UN Mansour A. Al-Otaibi, the current chairman of the OIC at the UN, presided. OIC delegates welcomed Ambassador Lodhi’s proposal that, as a first step, a delegation of the OIC meet UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and apprise him of their serious concern over the oppression of Rohingyas who have been forced into risking their lives by crossing the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea to seek refuge in Malaysia and Indonesia.

The meeting also approved the Pakistani envoy’s proposal, adopted by foreign ministers of Islamic countries in Kuwait earlier this month, be sent to UN Security Council President for its circulation as a document of the 15-member council.

That resolution underlined that the current crisis cannot be fully resolved through humanitarian action alone, and called on the government of Myanmar to restore the citizenship rights of its Rohingya minority.

In her remarks, Ambassador Lodhi said that the root cause of the Rohingya problem lay in the persistent denial of their fundamental human rights and liberties, including the right to citizenship.

“Subjected to systematic discrimination, restrictions on freedom of movement and practice of religion, constraints on property rights as well as access to education and health, they are certainly one of the world’s most persecuted minorities,” she said.

“They are forced to escape a life of confinement, waves of deadly violence directed against them, humiliation, persecution and lack of legal status in their own country. These unbearable conditions have compelled them to flee in desperate search for safety and human dignity.”

Quite a number.

India should be supporting Pakistan on the Myanmar issue. Both nations have an obligation, and capability to force Myanmar to change it's policy.

Neither India, nor pakistan have that capability, not even USA. India supported democratic elements for nearly 40 years, nothing happened. It only made myanmar a client state of china. And the beauty of chinese influence on a country is, they dont judge you, they simply want you to be on their side. The whole world cannot do much about north korea.
I understand pak govt position, govts tend to be selfish. I was talking about pakistani posters.

China hasn't been happy with Myanmar in recent times, and with Pakistan, much can be done to tame Myanmar's government. There are other methods than just supporting democratic forces. Economic pressure, and international isolation can do much more.

This annoys me. Why is Ms Lodhi concerned about Rohingya? Has she ever heard of "charity begins at home"? In our case how about first sorting out the genocide of the Hazara in Pakistan first please ....

we are talking about myanmar, an already isolated state. Only recently countries are doing deals in the hope that they will agree to international norms.

They're no longer isolated. Ever since their path to democratic normalization, they've re-entered the international community.

Economically, they rely a lot on South Asia for trade, it's one of their main cash cows. They're not stupid enough to cut that off.

Do OIC never adopt a proposal condemning atrocities on non-muslims?

Sorry, but Pakistan can do absolutely zilch against Myanmar as long as China(primarily) and India(secondarily) stand beside Myanmar.

Myanmar trades massively with China and India and as long as we continue to trade with them, any other sanction means absolutely nothing in real terms.

We along with Japan(JICA) are building a big international corridor between India, China, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam with multiple projects - ports, highways, power, etc . And we are not about to allow anyone to trouble Myanmar and hurt tens of billions of dollars worth of investment plans in that region! And hundred of billions of dollars total across the region!

India has learnt from China on this aspect, we no longer promote democracy or democratic forces anywhere else. We say categorically we are happy to deal with whoever makes the Government. We have after a lot of effort and a lot weapon supplies to their Army have been able to recover our standing in Myanmar and bring Myanmar back from exclusive Chinese influence!

Indeed, it was India that brought the rapprochement between Myanmar and USA! We are not about to let some OIC interfere in our collective plans for Myanmar!
