The first French factory PSA in Africa opened its doors on Thursday in Kenitra with a total investment of 557 million euros
The production capacity will initially reach 80,000, before moving to 200,000 cars in two years. The first Pogo-Citroen cars will have a 60% local integration rate before reaching 80% in the future.
The factory was able to produce the first engine and the first model of its own cars last year, a year and a half after the launch of the works, although Morocco agreed with the French factory to manufacture engines and not only to assemble locally.
The plant currently employs around 1,000 workers, a number that is expected to rise to 1,600 by the end of this year, before moving to 2,400 workers in the second phase.
The number of outsourced opportunities will reach 20,000, with 30,000 workers being recruited into the Peugeot constituency.
The Kenitra plant is expected to direct 90 percent of its production to exports, particularly North Africa and the Middle East, where the French producer is counting on the problems it faced in the Middle East market last year, with sales falling by 50 percent. Because of the suspension of production at the plant of Iran after the US economic sanctions.
General Manager of the PSA Group said: The factory will export cars to all African countries except South Africa because they are running the steering wheel on the right. If this car succeeds, other cars will be produced at this plant because all cars destined for Africa will be manufactured in Morocco.
What is new is that Morocco will also produce the electric version of Peugeot 208
