WASHINGTON/ISLAMABAD - President Obama has said that the US has a special relationship with Pakistan.
Talking to ambassador Jalil Abbas Jillani, the US president conveyed his best wishes to the president and the prime minister of Pakistan and vowed to strengthen bilateral ties. Jillani presented his appointment credentials to President Obama.
Separately, Pakistan on Monday asked the United States to expedite the reimbursements on account of Coalition Support Fund (CSF) to help boost the country’s foreign exchange reserves.
Finance Minister Senator Ishaq Dar Monday asked Thomas Williams, Charge’d Affairs of US Embassy in Islamabad, to expedite CSF reimbursements. Dar on the other day told media that US has to reimburse $1.6 billion to Pakistan under this fund.
The coalition support fund would help in building country’s depleting foreign exchange reserves, which currently stand at $8.74 billion wherein State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) held reserves are $3.92 billion and commercial banks are $4.82 billion.
Mr Thomas Williams called on Minister Senator Ishaq Dar at finance ministry who told the American diplomat that structural reforms that undertaken by the new government in the last eight months have started to yield positive results and all economic indicators were as per “our projection or even better”. The minister said that now Pakistan has fairly stable foreign exchange reserves and buoyant stock market which shows the confidence of the business community in the economic policies.
He emphasised that, at this stage, the US need to expedite CSF reimbursements to Pakistan.
The Charge’d Affairs assured the minister that US would continue to maintain partnership with Pakistan and work for peace and stability in the region. He said that they were looking forward to enhance their existing relations in all areas of mutual interest. He assured Dar that the reimbursements to Pakistan will be fast tracked. The meeting was also attended by Finance Secretary Dr Waqar Masood.

Now that he knows the Russian route is not available for Exiting the Equipment, suddenly Mr. Obama has Rediscovered how valuable and " Special " the Pakistani ties are.

Anyway, good for Pakistan as in the short term dollar will come down because of CSF Payments

Now, whenever a new ambassador is appointed to any country, it is customary for the head of the host nation to mouth platitudes and appreciation. At's all in the script.

Nothing new or earth shaking here. Just more of the same. :P
