Trade Minister Tim Groser is talking up trade ties between New Zealand and economic powerhouses Turkey and Russia.

The two countries are minor trading partners, but Mr Groser says historical ties with Turkey can be built on to form a "deep and dynamic trade relationship".

Mr Groser is in Turkey today and tomorrow, talking to local authorities about stimulating business links and increasing trade.

Niche areas such as specialised manufacturing, earthquake engineering, education, defence industry and healthcare have been identified as potential trade areas.

He will then travel to Russia for more trade-related meetings and to carry out more free trade agreement negotiations, which are expected to be concluded later this year.

New Zealand is the first country to begin FTA negotiations with the Russia-Belarus-Kazakhstan Customs Union.

Minister for Primary Industries David Carter and a group of businesspeople will join Mr Groser in Russia.

New Zealand exports about $4.7 billon worth of goods each year.

Exports of butter, antibiotics, wool and sheepskins to Turkey are worth about $54.6 million, according to Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade figures.

Exports of butter, meat, fish and cheese to Russia are worth around $275 million.
