NWFP IG accuses Levies of helping gun-runners, kidnappers

ISLAMABAD: Police are planning the takeover of the country’s largest den of kidnappers and gun-runners in Sakhakot, Malakand Agency, replacing the Levies, IG Police of NWFP, Naveed Malik, told The News.

He explained that “people kidnapped from the Punjab are being sold by kidnappers to the dealers in Sakhakot who approach the relatives of the kidnapped for ransom. It turns out to be unprecedented, and the plan is that the police take it over from the Levies.”

He added that the Levies personnel abet the kidnappers and protect their dens from raids whenever the authorities plan them. “These personnel tip the ringleaders in advance, and that is how this dirty business has been flourishing over the past years.”

Elders from Mardan and the leading figures of the four tribes --Yousufzai, Mandann, Momand and Malezai -- have been constantly urging the government and the relevant authorities to do something conclusive about the kidnappers’ dens in Malakand, especially Sakhakot, but these pleadings have been falling on deaf ears.

When asked how the police took it up to replace the Levies and make a conclusive move in this regard, IG Police NWFP, Malik Naveed, and the convener of tribal jirgas’ joint platform, the Pukhtun Aman Jirga (PAJ), Syed Kamal Shah were unanimous in response: “These gangs have become too strong for the Levies. The Police Act needs to be extended to Sakhakot, so that effective steps are taken for the elimination of these gangs”.

Kamal Shah told The News that PAJ would form a Lashkar of these four tribes and attack Sakhakot if the government delayed the extension of the Police Act to that region. “I have proof that the Levies abet these gangs. One of the ringleaders’ wife is an official in the Levies, and there are other female Levies officials that are the source of protection for the gangs. Lately, these females have been supervising the kidnapping acts when women and children from the vicinities of Mardan, Nowshera and Swabi were taken for ransom.”

^its possible as all para-military security apparatus are made up of volunteers from the FATA tribes and naturally sympathisers can exist within. a better 'scrutiny' of the recruitment is required.

What are levies again? Part of frontier constabulary (and not corps) or like khasadar force?

Khasadar Force, they are not under Frontier Constabulary or Corps.

Fully made up of the locals with no proper training and the above what said is true about them also.

Yes I know about khasadars. They are just a means of getting pay from the government. But what are levies? Constabulary?
