Islam forbids atomic weapons and other arms of mass destruction, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad insisted on Wednesday ahead of his country’s nuclear talks with world powers in Baghdad, as Israel urged world powers not to waver in key talks with Iran.

“Based on Islamic teachings and the clear fatwa (edict) of the supreme leader, the production and use of weapons of mass destruction is haram (forbidden)", he said.

Though no published fatwa exists, Iranian scholars point out that declarations by prominent ayatollahs can later take on the weight of a fatwa.

Where is this mentioned in the Quran? When it was written there was no such thing as WMDs! So where, when and who has forbidden this?

And if it's true what Ahmadinejad insists, then where does it leave Pakistan, the only Muslim power having a nuke? Will it be considered 'haram'?

Looks like a compromise is on the cards. Good news. Western-Iranian standoff is especially bad for the developing world.

WMDs are not forbidden per se, but given the fact you can use them to wipe out large populations is what makes them "Haram".

Etiquettes of war in Islam include that unarmed people and those not attacking you cannot be killed, no matter what. WMDs on the other hand, are obviously to be used on civilian centres and not on a battlefield.

As far as Pakistan goes, we're probably not ever going to use them unless on the verge of extermination ourselves. We have Nukes to keep war at bay, nothing more or less.

It's ok guys, Ahmadinejad says his religion won't allow for wmd's. It was all just a big misunderstanding hahah.
