Tehran: Iran has announced it would launch an Islamic internet to counter the influence of the US dominated world wide web.

"Iran will soon create an internet that conforms to Islamic principles, to improve its communication and trade links with the world," Ali Aqamohammadi, head of economic affairs with the Iranian presidency, told state news agency IRNA.

Aqamohammadi said Iran's new network will operate parallel to the world wide web and will replace it in Muslim countries in the region.

"We can describe it as a genuinely 'halal' network aimed at Muslims on a ethical and moral level."

"The aim of this network is to increase Iran and the Farsi language's presence in what has become the most important source of international communication," Aqamohammadi said.

A "new" internet makes no sense whatsoever. 'Teheran' clearly doesn't know how the internet works. Creating new sites in farsi is all good and well but that is not a "new" internet. Also adding censorship to a platform that is, as one song pointed out years ago, essentially "for ****" is not gonna change much.. except require Iranians to acquire a little proxy skills.

I think censorship should be kept as low as it possibly can, because once the government starts to censor things, they may censor anything they find threatening to the leaders in power. Also, the government may say they will censor the internet for one reason such as blocking ****, but may actually censor any political dissenters using **** as an excuse to censor them.

hmmm so basically they are going to have their own satellites and networks and register only Islamic websites on it.

Meaning no **** or gambling websites allowed on their servers and that also mean hopefully current websites may not be accessible from their networks.
