Union minister Arun Jaitley, who was appointed the Defence minister just days ago after Manohar Parrikar stepped down to become the chief minister of Goa, met Russia’s Minister of Trade and Industry Denis Manturov at Manekshaw Centre on Friday. Manturov is on a two-day visit to India to focus on issues related to the $1-billion Indo-Russian deals including Kamov-226 helicopters, the progress of Project 1135-6 frigates for the Indian Navy and T-90 tanks for the Indian Army, among others. Soon after the meeting, Arun Jaitley said, “India is one of the largest importers of defense equipment in the world, and this definitely is not a label we are happy with.” Addressing a conference on India-Russia Military and Industrial cooperation, Jaitley called for deeper bilateral engagement in defense production. He said that Russia should at least facilitate manufacturing of parts and subsystems, which are needed in large numbers and where the requirement is recurring in nature.
According to FE Bureau, “Besides meeting with the new defense minister Arun Jaitley, three sets of meetings have been planned for the visiting minister. He will meet officials of Indian Army, Navy and the Air Force. The interaction between the Russian side and the Indian armed forces, as well as the industry, is to see how all can work together as a support system.”
On the day, two agreements were signed at the conference between India’s Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) and Russia’s United Aircraft Corporation and United Engine Corporation for the long-term supply of spares and technical assistance for Sukhoi Su-30MKI aircraft for five years.
Saying that these moves are part of the larger defense and economic agenda chalked out by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for India, FM Jaitley said, “PM, after forming the government, launched the Make in India initiative; defense production is identified as one of the key areas under this.”
Earlier today, Defence Minister Jaitley while intervening in the Lok Sabha during a debate had said that the Indian armed forces were fully prepared to meet any challenge and asked the Opposition to be very careful about conveying the impression that they were not due to lack of procurement.

Indians lack the ability to reverse engineer. Even Iranian reverse engineer. And Indians neighbor Pakistan reverse ebgineer as well. The excuse Indians give is that Indians don't copy as Indians are creative people and only build things from scratch.LOL.

West Owes it to Pakistan, for providing well paying jobs to their citizen

Well indian copy cat failiures are well known

Even superman turned into comedy

Indians like to portray China as copy cat country  they don't even know how to copy Superman properly , Superman know how to fly, maybe India lack of technology so their Superman's legs couldn't get off the ground :P. And Russia don't want to TOT

Indian superpowa living a dream. No country will provide TOT especially for newer tech. What was Indian military leaders smoking ? Even US do not give their allies SK and Japan tech transfer.
Maybe when US can operate a base in India from LEMOA then it be a different story.

For over 6 years since the first photo of J-20, these Indians mocked China for bad copy of American F-22 with no Chinese engines, now they've realized themselves are even worst than China, they're just empty handed after invest billions over T-50, and the only way to get rid of the humiliation for lacking behind China, they're trying to twist Russia's arm for TOT...and expect to catch China up quickly this way

Very true. They are hoping begging would work... and they are serious.

This happens when India lack capability to reverse engineer. Pakistan and Iran has this ability and they are much smaller countries.

Even if Indians want to copy, they wouldn't dare because they're afraid of the sanction, imagine if Russia and Western don't sell them the spare parts and munitions...India will be over...so they turn around to claim that they're honest and don't violate the intellectual property of other nations like China, they surely know how to find the way to comfort themselves

China copied from Russian tech and Russia sell even more advanced planes to China. India is either too afraid to copy or incapable of copying the planes. India will not make too much progress.

People posting Indians are afraid to reverse engineer. Sheer stupidity.

Its not that Indian PSU cannot reverse engineer, They wont. None of you understand how Indian companies work.

Sigh.

No country or companies with sane leadership will provide TOT to another country. By doing so you are just shooting yourself in the foot and lose a repeating customer.
