Norwegian cops fired their guns twice last year and missed both times!

.
There has been a remarkable increase in interest worldwide how Norwegians run their police system. So much that even the great Washington Times had to run an article on which received widespread acclaim. This article is currently on the top most reading list in the papers international section:

The Norwegian government recently released statistics about how the country's police department used guns in recent years, painting a picture of a nation where police officers rarely draw their guns and rarely injure anyone with those guns.

The report found that in 2014, Norwegian police threatened to use their weapons 42 times. However, only two shots were actually fired during the entire year, and no one was wounded by either.

The report also featured historical data showing that the number of times police officers had drawn their weapons was at its lowest in at least 12 years.

The number of shots fired was also lower than in some previous years.
b582.gif

The number of people wounded (zero) was lower than the previous year, and lower than the recent high of five in 2004.
b583.gif

And for the 10th time in 12 years, not a single person was killed by police gunfire in Norway in 2014.
b584.gif

To American readers, these numbers might sound shocking. Consider this: Even in 2011, when 77 people, mostly children, were killed by right-wing terrorist Anders Behring Breivik, police fired their guns only once and injured one person (Breivik himself surrendered to armed police without police firing a shot).

There's a simple reason for the lack of police shootings. While there are many hunters in the country and gun ownership is relatively common, Norway is one of a handful of European nations where police officers don't usually carry guns. Breivik's rampage at a children's summer camp led some to question whether this was a good move (among the first to die was an unarmed police officer working security at the camp). The government recently hinted that it may consider arming more police officers.

Things are, of course, very different in the United States. While the country is far larger than Norway (318 million vs. 5 million) and nationwide figures are rarely announced, police shootings are clearly disproportionately common: By The Post's count, more than 400 people have been shot and killed by police already this year.

@TankMan @Atanz @Syed.Ali.Haider @LeveragedBuyout @Hyperion @Oscar @WAJsal @Zarvan @C130 @mr42O @Darth Vader @Emilly David and others who wish to learn from our system of non-violent, yet crime diminishing police force?

Yes, I alread brought up this subject on how we all could learn from Scandanavia and Norway in particuler. Size or wealth is only part of the story. USA is not poor and Albania or Republic of Ireland are not large.

The main reason behind the remarkably low gun crime is Scandanavia and Norweigian's in particular having built up very fair, tolerant and equitable societies.

Once these qualities are in place they take way the rough edges in society and when there is any the "tolerance" absorbs any bumps - notwithstanding individuels like Breivik who are abberations rather than the norm.

I give a simple example. I would feel quite comfortable in moving to Norway despite my ethinc background. On the other hand I would not feel quite as comfortable in moving to Italy or Greece despite the fact that I would contrast less with those people because they are Mediteranean. Despite being 'similar' I would be subject to more intolerance.

I have been to Greece and I know what I am talking about. I have never been to Norway but I have met many Norweigian's in UK and the outlook is inspiringly open and tolerant. Long it may stay that way.

As a anecdote I would point to "Markus" the racist Italian member we had here. He pasted his picture here and I commented to him that he looked like "North African" so I don't understand where his rabid racism was coming from. We recently had the Tunisian massacre and my comment was reinforced when I saw picture of Tunisian terroristRezgui who bore strong resemblance to 'our' Markus.

Oh please spare me the horror. We know about your bravery as well. lost half of your country and no one knows how many died in terrorist attacks and how many droned/ Keep your false bravado to yourself. We are not known for switching sides just like you. Like the way you fought against Ruskies and now are sitting on her lap. Don't try to provoke me else few of your countrymen will feel offended because of your stupidness.

We are not "sitting on her lap." I think your mixing Pak with India there. Relations may have improved but we are far from being in the Russian lap. I know some members can be stupid but try not use their stupidity to malign all of Pakistan. I have absolute respect for Sweden.Would it be too much to ask if you could reciprocate?

@Umair Nawaz Stop behaving like a certified oaf. All your doing is giving Miss Swedan oppurtunity to lambast Pakistan. We have enough Indian's doing that . Must you add Viking's to the list?

I just quoted the truth :-). Calling me by names just shows that I was quite right in my last post.
I said the truth ? Y u so frustrated though?

It's quiet a shame to see indian with a European name barking on small things ? Ah..!

I stand with what I said and you are proving it. If you want to prove me wrong then just tell me where I am wrong ?

I was just writing on this thread which has nothing related to your beloved nation. SOON a stalker came in and started writing nonsense. I countered him the way, the way he get things in thickhead.

Come to UP or Bihar, Police has atleast two type of guns one official which doesnt work, other is unofficial, which works all the time :)

Hehehe... So true... Once in my home district a sanctioned encounter took place on river bank... All policemen used their other guns.. So no official bullets were used and later they had to declare this as killings in gangwar.. Inspector ( who was heading the encounter ) was transferred to naxal belt..r

OT : @Zarvan ... Got any suggestion for Norwegian police..? Their guns seem to be malfunctioning...

 still we never lost our entire country against any one in a matter of weeks HINT; WW2

While we r succeeding where yr entire NATO failed ie against TALIBAN. Not only that but we r the reasons why yr NATO and America ran away from afghanistan and so did Russia before.

We basically made USSR Russia with the help of America but made US of A to America with their own American money. Isnt that a work of genius? U defeat a superpower by its own money and weapons.:azn:

We switch sides when our interests are met from one side, after all its all abt national interests. A country of our size and importance in global affairs has to play according to her own rules if she needs to survive.

I want some of what you're smoking. I like delusions in the summer.

Policing is an Art, in fact even most of our men and women in blue don't actually know how to perform policing.

For those of you who can watch Youtube look at these two video

The first one is how Swedish Police officer break up a fight in NYC Subway. The second one is how NYPD do it.

Now, for those of you who know anything about crowd control, you would know the key to break off a fight is to separate two party and do not let them engage each other

Then you deescalate the situation.

If you look at the Swedish Cop, they did exactly just that.

However, if you look at the NYPD, what they did is completely different, they engage on either party.

Now, I am not saying which PD is better the question is training.

NYPD Police academy offer a 6 months course with the academy then 1 year in probation. In Sweden, one need to be High School Graduate and take the 1 year Academy Training with another year on the job training. And with a different curriculum.

In the US Police were trained with Self Defence, Traffic Control, Law, Firearms handling, First Aid and also Law Enforcement technique.

While Police IN Sweden were focusing on Community Policing and only touching the basic of all other.
