What's new

Northrop Grumman offered E-2D advance hawkeye to Indian military.

And where would you propose putting the radome?

It's only a concept as of now, but if there are enough interested customers, Boeing reckons its doable.

E2D is a capability multiplier. Of course a must for INS Vishal. Shore based i am not sure unless iin 5 years IN buys few to get themselves trained so that they can easily operate it. They may complement p8Is but i believe India may give a follow on order more for p8Is then E2D new introduction as of now.. Just my thots really

can you make a comparison b/w them...!! i think Hawkeye is better than EV-22

I wish, I knew. But there was a quote by a former admiral saying the V22 is what the IN wants not the E2. Let me dig that up for you.

EDit : Here you are

Meanwhile, the stage may finally be set for the Indian Navy to acquire a squadron of four Northrop Grumman E-2D Hawkeye AEW&C aircraft. The navy uses Kamov KA-31 for its AEW missions but requires aircraft with a longer range and endurance. An RFI was issued as long ago as 2010, and Northrop Grumman has submitted a proposal for a shore-based version of the E-2D. Once the IAC-2 comes into operation, the aircraft could be modified for carrier operations in just one week, a U.S. official told AIN. But retired Vice Admiral A.K. Singh suggested that an AEW version of the V-22 Osprey might be the answer.

This one looks way too statically unbalanced. I like the other one better.

The good thing is this looks like an AESA concept with triangular arrangement of static T/R arrays.

I would actually prefer such an AESA radar for whatever platform Indian Navy eventually goes for.

Guys thanks for this E2D, its mind boggling really but now few question

1. What does its introduction means Indian Navy going Expeditionary Blue Navy.

2. Does it means Buy US - EMAL with F-35

3. Become strategic partner with US, leaving Non-Allignment,

Old news, the USG cleared this in 2011.

What we need to do is take the avionics and use the Osprey as a platform.
Why? The E-2D can fly higher and has longer endurance- it is a FAR more attractive (and cost effective) option than an undeveloped V-22 AEW. The V-22 AEW would be good for the IN's STOBAR carriers (IAC 1 and Viky) but it is very costly and it is unlikely the IN would go for two new AEW systems. The E-2D will be a great capability for the EMALS-equipped IAC-2.

The IN has stated for a long time now it intends to become a full-fledged blue water navy.

The IN is known to be designing the IAC-2 as a CATOBAR carrier and getting the EMALS seems to be high on their agenda- I've not even heard talk about steam catapult tech being looked at. As for the F-35C, the jury is out- the ideal option would be the N-FGFA but this doesn't look like it can be launched from catapults, the F-35C is a strong contender (perhaps the strongest).

3. Become strategic partner with US, leaving Non-Allignment,
Why so? India is getting cutting edge kit from Russia (top of the line in fact- SSNs and 5th gen fighters) but this hasn't forced India to abandon its non-aligned policy.

Multiple reasons. And not related to cost.

1. In an operational scenario, it can be quickly deployed in forward areas where landing strips may not exist.
2. It can be further standardised in the future as the aircraft for our AWACS program, carrier replenishment and marine assault programs.
3. There was an option provided to the USN to use the Osprey as a AEW platform, hence, this is possible.
4. Yes, I do agree the E2D flies higher, but, then the V22 can fly longer with tanks, since its payload capacity is much higher and it can carry more equipment.

Having said the above, I will be glad if the E2D comes on board.
Also, with the manufacture of the Ka 226 imminent, I don't see how the V22 will fit in.
