슬쩍 노출한 '북극성-3형'...신형 SLBM 발사 가능성? / SBS

Visit to Chemical Materials Institute of Academy of Defence Science

[2017-08-23]

Kim Jong Un, Chairman of the Workers' Party of Korea, Chairman of the State Affairs Commission of the DPRK and Supreme Commander of the Korean People's Army, gave field guidance to the Chemical Materials Institute of the Academy of Defence Science.

After looking round the newly-built room for the education in the revolutionary history and exhibition hall of scientific and technological achievements, he learned about the processes for manufacturing ICBM warhead tip and solid-fuel rocket engine.

Acquainting himself with the processes for preform weaving by carbon fibre, chemical deposition, high pressure liquid deposition and final treatment, he learned in detail about the density of perform, deposition temperature, vacuum degree and deposition time in the chemical deposition process, deposition temperature, pressure, working medium and deposition frequency in the high pressure liquid deposition process and technological specifications in the final treatment process.

He then made a field survey of the process for manufacturing solid-fuel rocket engine and specified tasks and ways for normalizing the production at a higher level.

He set forth important tasks facing the institute.

He instructed the institute to produce more solid-fuel rocket engines and rocket warhead tips by further expanding engine production process and the production capacity of rocket warhead tips and engine jets by carbon/carbon compound material.

'Turtle Ships' Named Among Greatest Warships of All Time

Apr. 11, 2016

The turtle ships built by Admiral Yi Sun Shin to repel the Japanese invasion in the 16th century have been named as among the best warships of all time.

The turtle ships take their rightful place among modern warships like the first nuclear-powered submarine and aircraft carriers.

They were included as a result of a poll of 26,000 military experts.

The Turtle ships with their convex-covered decks "were not only virtually impenetrable, but also fast and maneuverable."

Current North Korean Navy: North Korean Conventional Ballistic Missile Submarine (SSB)

Satellite imagery shows North Korea actively pursuing SLBM development

2016/05/04

Recent satellite imagery shows North Korea is forging ahead with development of a submarine-launched ballistic missile.

The imagery taken of North Korea's Shinpo Shipyard on April 29, six days after North Korea's latest SLBM test, shows that a submersible missile test stand barge has been moved from its normal position.

"This shift in location suggests that the SLBM program may be moving towards a more advanced stage of development where the need for a submersible test stand barge has diminished". "That conclusion appears to be reinforced by recent test launches from the submarine itself rather than the barge."

It described North Korea's SLBM test as "successful."

On Saturday, North Korea fired a SLBM from a 2,000-ton Sinpo-class submarine in the East Sea in its latest SLBM test-firing after the country first publicized it carried out a SLBM ejection test in May 2015.

After soaring from the water, the ballistic missile flew some 30 kilometers.

North Korea's current 2,000-ton submarine can embark and launch one SLBM from about 10 to 15 meters below the water's surface. This shallow depth puts the submarine at greater risk of detection compared with bigger SLBM-equipped submarines that could go down some 50 meters, the experts said.

North Korea aims to build new 3,000-ton sub armed with 3 SLBMs

2016/04/25

North Korea may be in the process of developing a 3,000-ton submarine that can provide a stable platform to launch three submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBM) as the country is scurrying to enhance its nuclear delivery capability, military experts here said Monday.

Local military observers said to meet such a goal, North Korea may move to test-fire SLBMs until it is confident in launching a missile that can fly as far as 2,000 kilometers, the experts also predicted.

Although the flight distance fell far short of a regular SLBM that could fly several thousand kilometers, South experts assessed that North Korea has made progress in advancing its technology from the initial ejection test stage to the flight test phase.

IHS Jane's Defence Weekly

30 August 2016

the construction of a new class of submarine ... to be completed by 9 September 2018 to mark the 70th anniversary of the founding of the nation, would be capable of firing two or three ballistic missiles, said the paper.

North Korean Nuclear-Powered Ballistic Missile Submarine (SSBN)

2017/08/26

North Korea's submarine-launched ballistic missile, Pukguksong-2, is only a medium range solid-fuel missile of about 3,000 kilometers.
Therefore, it is highly likely that the Pukguksong-2 is a weapon targeting the US bases in Japan and Guam.

It is likely that the missile capable of hitting Hawaii or Alaska will be the Pukguksong-3 submarine-launched ballistic missile.

The question is whether North Korea can build such a large submarine capable of carrying these large missiles, and if so, how many.

North Korea has developed a new type of submarine that can mount several long-range submarine-launched ballistic missiles in 1995 by raising the submarine height with a two-story structure, as supervised by General Kim Jong Il.

If the first prototype was developed in 1995, it should have been mass produced by now, 20 years later, and several units should have been deployed.

The submarine could be loaded with 10 ballistic missiles. If the number of missiles is reduced to about 5, it would be possible to hit the US mainland by increasing the missile's diameter.

It is likely that the Pukguksong-3 or the next Pukguksong-4 will be that ICBM. Of course, it is a solid propellant missile.

The public disclosure of the Pukguksong-3 is a direct indication of the operation of such SSBN.

It is a submarine capable of carrying 10 or more submarine-launched ballistic missiles and it is said that such submarines have already been deployed. With this two-story structure, the length of the submarine can be increased to accommodate even more missiles. In addition, by increasing the diameter of the missile, it is possible to increase its range.

Iran Plans to Build Nuclear-Fueled Submarines

June 12, 2012

TEHRAN (FNA)- A senior Iranian Navy commander stressed Iran's high capabilities in designing and manufacturing different types of submarines, and announced the country's move towards manufacturing nuclear-powered submarines.

Speaking to FNA on Tuesday, Lieutenant Commander of the Navy for Technical Affairs Rear Admiral Abbas Zamini pointed to the navy's plan to manufacture super heavy nuclear-powered submarines, and stated, "Right now, we are at the initial phases of manufacturing atomic submarines."

He noted Iran's astonishing progress in developing and acquiring civilian nuclear technology for various power-generation, agricultural and medical purposes, and said such advancements allow Iran to think of manufacturing nuclear-fueled submarines.

He further reminded that using nuclear power to fuel submarines is among the civilian uses of the nuclear technology and all countries are, thus, entitled to the right to make such a use.

Rouhani Orders Production of Highly Enriched Nuclear Fuel in Response to US Violation of Vienna Deal

Tue Dec 13, 2016 3:25

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Tuesday ordered the country's nuclear agency to start plans to produce nuclear fuel and propulsion systems for ships and submarines in response to the violation of the Vienna deal by Washington.

"Considering that the US administration has ignored and delayed compliance with its undertakings under the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action), and given the recent extension of the Iran Sanctions Act (ISA) that had already been declared as a violation of the nuclear deal by the Islamic Republic of Iran..., the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran is ordered to develop the country's peaceful nuclear program within the framework of the Islamic Republic of Iran's international undertakings as defined in the following missions," President Rouhani said in a letter to AEOI Chief Ali Akbar Salehi on Tuesday.

First, President Rouhani said, the AEOI is required "to plan for designing and building propulsion systems to be used in marine transportation in cooperation with scientific and research centers".

He also asked the Iranian nuclear agency to conduct studies to design "production of fuel for nuclear propulsion systems".

Rouhani required Zarif to inform him of his actions and their results in one month, while he asked Salehi to report back to him in maximum 3 months.

Nuclear propulsion uses a nuclear power reactor to generate electricity on a vessel. Such systems are best known for their use on strategic nuclear submarines, which allow them to stay submerged for weeks avoiding detection. Nuclear propulsion is also used on some big surface ships like aircraft carriers or icebreakers.

Thank you for your contribution here. A lot of westerners seem to underestimate North Korea's abilities and seem to treat the possibility of US cities being destroyed with contempt. For me this seems almost as dangerous as the rhetoric because if a fool does not understand the danger he is in, then he will not treat the situation with proper respect and caution.

These woven filament carbon fibre tanks forming the structure of DPRK's missiles are a huge leap forward because they more than halve the static mass (empty structural weight) of a missile which can be translated to greater range even when compared with an identical missile made from metal. The Hwasong-13 appears to be a copy of the Soviet RT-2 only made from Carbon Fibre. can you comment is that a fair analysis?

Also I am interested in the Pukguksong-3, have you got any dimensions or range/performace figures which you are at liberty to share?

Is this Pukguksong-3 missile intended to replace the Pukguksong-1 as a submarine launched missile and if so, then are dimensions similar or different?

If the dimensions are different then does this indicate they are not intended for the Submarine Gorae?
Is Gorae just a proof of concept vessel?

I researched some articles in online Korean newspapers which quote a 2016 report of defectors to the South. One of them called Kim Heung-kwang claimed that DPRK plans to build two future submarine classes. One will be a 3,000t diesel boat (presumably based on the Soviet Foxtrot?) and another of 3,500t which it was suggested would be a nuclear powered SSBN based on the GOLF-II class but with four launch tubes.

If you are at liberty to comment is that accurate, especially about the GOLF-II class?

Will it be a brand new built copy, or a rebuild of retired Soviet vessels?
Will the nuclear boat have the same nuclear reactor as the 30MWth ELWR plant at Yeongbyon?
Will the SSBN have one or two reactors?

Please can anybody definitively state what happened to 10 (or 12) GOLF-II class submarines towed from Russia to North Korea for scrapping?
YPwEvy

Were they all cut up?
Were some saved and concealed?
38 North notes that examination of commericial satellite imagery since 2010 reveals no GOLF-II boats in NK ports, yet reports of two 3,500t SLBM being converted to nuclear power continue to circulate

North Korea's New Strategic Submarine

Completing the North Korean nuclear doublet. According to some foreign intelligence estimates, the submarine’s submerged displacement is thought to be in excess of 2,000 tons with a beam measurement of 11 meters. The vessel is likely the largest ever to be built for the Korean People’s Navy.

“This vessel looks much larger than the previous submarine. From the limited imagery, it’s possible it has a missile bay capable of accommodating as many as four ballistic missiles.”

“If you look closely at the photo” of the submarine in the KCNA article, said Moon, “you can see there are dents that appeared to have been caused by water pressure.”

Moon, a former commander of a South Korean Navy submarine squadron, continued, “That’s a trace that normally can’t be found on a newly built submarine, which is why I think [North Korea] got a submarine from Russia and is now trying to build a missile launching tube in it.”

New North Korean SSB

Completing the North Korean nuclear duad along its TEL launched ICBMs, this new "Narval" Class (일각고래: ILGAKKOLAE) SSB should have enough room to carry up to 6 Pukguksong-1 SLBMs.

Thus, giving the DPRK a true seaborn deterrent undersea for the first time, and needed in conducting any credible second-strike.

Today, the "Narval" class SSB allows the DPRK to join as the sixth member the world most elite club of great thermonuclear powers with strategic submarines.

North Korea launches longer-range Pukguksong-3 SLBM

SEOUL, Oct. 2 (Yonhap) -- What North Korea fired from waters off its east coast on Wednesday appears to be a newer, longer-range version of its submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) that could pose greater threats to global security, experts said.

According to South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS), the missile, believed to be a type of the North's Pukguksong SLBM, was fired from waters off the east coast near Wonsan in an easterly direction at around 7:11 a.m. It flew around 450 kilometers at a maximum altitude of about 910 km, it added.

It is North Korea's 11th weapons test so far this year, but it is the first test firing of the submarine-based projectile, which is classified as a medium-range missile. During the previous 10 rounds of tests, Pyongyang fired only shot-range ones.

"Today's test could be North Korea's declaration of its development of the new SLBM, or Pukguksong-3, which is the upgraded version of the Pukguksong-1 missile," said Moon Keun-sik, an expert at the Korea Defense and Security Forum.

In August 2016, North Korea successfully test-fired a Pukguksong-1 ballistic missile, codenamed KN-11, from a 2,000-ton Sinpo-class submarine off the east coast, which flew around 500 km at the maximum altitude of around 500 to 600 km.

The communist country then showed off the Pukguksong-2 missile, also known as KN-15, in 2017, which is not an SLBM but a ground-based one.

"So far, we've confirmed that North Korea developed the two Pukguksong-type missiles, and their flight ranges reach around 1,300 km," Defense Minister Jeong kyeong-doo said during a parliamentary audit on Wednesday.

North Korea is known to have been improving the solid-fueled SLBM. In August 2017, the North's official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) released photos showing the design of what was presumably the Pukguksong-3 missile.

"What makes the SLBM formidable is that it is quite difficult to detect those launched from under water," said Shin Jong-woo, a senior analyst at the Korea Defense and Security Forum in Seoul.

"The Pukguksong-3 missile would also be designed to be launched from canisters, which makes it easier to transport and more difficult to detect in advance," he noted.

1. Early attempt of modeling the reported launch out of Wonsan with 450 km range & 910 km peak. Results are preliminary:
Cutoff speed ~3750 m/s at ~90 km altitude, total flight time 17+ minutes. Would have crossed Japan at ~500 km and flown 2000 km if launched for max range.

DPRK Academy of Defence Science Succeeds in Test-firing of New-type SLBM

Pyongyang, October 3 (KCNA) -- The Academy of Defence Science of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea succeeded in test-firing the new-type SLBM Pukguksong-3 in the waters off Wonsan Bay of the East Sea of Korea on Wednesday morning.

The new-type ballistic missile was fired in vertical mode.

The test-firing scientifically and technically confirmed the key tactical and technical indexes of the newly-designed ballistic missile and had no adverse impact on the security of neighboring countries.

The leading officials of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) and in the field of the national defence scientific research who guided the test-firing on the spot informed the WPK Central Committee of the result of the successful test-firing.

Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un sent warm congratulations on behalf of the Central Committee of the WPK to the national defence scientific research units involved in the test-firing.

The successful new-type SLBM test-firing comes to be of great significance as it ushered in a new phase in containing the outside forces' threat to the DPRK and further bolstering its military muscle for self-defence. -0-

The Japanese defense minister said “ Pukguksong-3’s normal range: 2500 km”

Tonight, I attended a meeting with Minister Kono. The minister said, “The north ballistic missile on the 2nd is estimated to have traveled about 450 km and reached a maximum altitude of about 900 km, and if it is a normal orbit, it could reach a maximum of 2500 km, which is equivalent to a quasi-medium-range ballistic missile, Furthermore, it seems to be a new solid fuel propulsion type SLMB (submarine launching ballistic missile), but further analysis is necessary. Meanwhile the general rule of thumb for converting apogee to lateral range is: apogee = 1/4 of range.

With this 910 km lofted ballistic minimum energy trajectory (MET), the total normal lateral range is 3'600 km, putting Guam well within its striking range!
