The People's Volunteer Army was a military force that fought during the Korean War. They were deployed to Korea in October of 1950 by the People's Republic of China to aid the DPRK in repelling the US Army and UN Forces in Korea. The People's Volunteer Army had approximately 926,000 men who were poorly equipped and had very little air support. However, despite these shortcomings, the PVA proved capable of placing American and UN forces on the defensive. This song was written to inspire those in the PVA, and now it honors those who fought and died in the PVA.

well , there is another different narrative of that war from some other historian perspective
to be exact this one

it means north Korea pushed south Korea under armed and under manned forces, USA begin intervene and slowely increased its forces in south Korea , in first because of cutting down in USA military forces budget in years after war , they didn't had enough weapon to counter North Korea tanks . but after enough reinforcement in Pusan they managed to send north Korea back to china border , and then China made a surprise counter attack with around 1350000 soldiers with the support of USSR Air Force and send USA and South force back toward 38 degree parallel but because of resistance of 6000 Turkish force stationed there and their resistance for two days they could not encircle USA forces and destroy them completely and after that after loosing the element of surprise the rest of battle was stalemate for two side (in fact USA force managed to send Chinese force above 38 degree and at the end North come with less land than before the war)
In short 1 million soldier and 2.5 million civilian died for nothing ,
by the way for each soldier died from south 2-3 soldier died in north. and no unlike what stated USA and china and USSR air force participated in that useless war .

first it was North vs Unarmed south , then USA come and drove north back to china border , then china counter attacked without any prior warning and send them back half way down south and it was 1st and 2nd china offensive but then you lost the element of surprise you made 3 more offensive but they all failed and in fact from 2/51 till 7/51 your forces were on retreat and from then till the end of the war it was only firing pot shot at each other by the way the end result was clear look at today Korean border and you see its mainly north of 38th parallel
