No Indian players for SLPL - BCCI

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to disallow its players to be part of the Sri Lankan Premier League (SLPL), which is scheduled to take place on July 18, for the board is still largely unsure of the nitty gritties of the tournament. In an IPL meeting held at the BCCI headquarters on Saturday afternoon, the BCCI chief Shashank Manohar expressed his concern over sending its cricketers to Sri Lanka.

The issue may snowball into a standoff if Sri Lanka Cricket retaliates by pulling the plug on its players’ participation in the IPL.

A top BCCI official confirmed with The Sunday Express that the Indian players won’t be allowed to take part in SLPL. “We don’t know who is organising it, we are yet to get formal papers about the event. We have only been reading about the SLPL in the newspapers, and about the fact that there are players from India who want to take part in it. Till date though, we haven’t received any official letter from the Sri Lankan board. There is no authentication about the tournament so far,” a top official said on the condition of anonymity.

However, it is reliably learnt that the main reason the Indian board has decided to bar it players from the Island league is because SLC has outsourced their event to Somerset Entertainment Ventures (Singapore) Pvt Ltd, a Singapore based company.

The BCCI, also, are miffed because they weren’t the first to know that the private company has been negotiating with players from both India and abroad, and earning a commission to represent players in SLPL. Even during the fourth season of the IPL, the BCCI had cut the wings of agents who tried to convince player to represent a certain franchise by procuring a tri-party contract.

“The Sri Lankan board first told us that they will be organising it, so the BCCI agree to send those players who are available. So far, we were of the impression that the Lankan board will look after their SLPL like we do with the IPL.

“Also, the Sri Lankan board is not an elected board, they are run by the government. Later we heard they brought in a private company to conduct it. We don’t know how they will be organising it, and neither do we want another ICL like situation tomorrow,” source added.

While many Indian players may have already signed a contract with SLPL, the BCCI is yet to issue No Objection Certificate (NOC) to those concerned. Players such as Irfan Pathan, Saurabh Tiwary and Munaf Patel had reportedly signed with the SLPL, which is a 15 day tournament.

No Indian players as long as SL board doesn't give BCCI the details of the event.

aww god.........another cricket premier league . this game is now turning out 2 b quite boring . i cant watch another match before at least half a dozen months........

.
These leagues will destory cricket . I want to go back to the good old days of bilateral and triangular series . Waiting for the India England tournament.

.
This is really a bad move by BCCI...Why BCCI is creating so many enemies??
BCCI should behave in a mature and sensible way rather that fighting for each slice from a small cup cake...BCCI has to grow up and change the attitude..

.
Why would the 5 star Indian players would want to play in SLPL? Its like asking Arnold Schwarzenegger to work in Bhojpuri film. hahhaa:lol: or worse in lollywood film.

.
I seriously feel BCCI should change its attitude, currently I don't think it is on friendly terms with any other cricket board. It doesn't need to boss over other boards just cause its the richest and most powerful cricket board.

.
Its a good decision, these leagues are making players exhausted, the amount of money involved in it makes them greedy and rather playing for their national team they opt for these leagues...But it will open chances for younger players who are aiming for a national team selection..if possible we should expose our second grade players to this kind of leagues so that they will gain some valuable experiences playing with/against the international players :)

.
fcuk cricket, watch football for a change .

watch India vs Qatar tonight @ 10pm tonight on ten action if anyone's in interested :D

SLC rejects Indian board's claim over SLPL

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has rejected the BCCI's claim that the Sri Lanka Premier League (SLPL) is a private-party organised tournament, saying that the SLPL is owned and approved by SLC - and so, automatically, by the ICC - and that Singapore-based Somerset Ventures only owns the commercial rights to the tournament. The BCCI had on Saturday said it would not allow Indian players to participate in the tournament on the grounds that it was a privately-run event but the reality is that there is little difference between the SLPL and the BCCI-run IPL.

"This tournament is approved by SLC," its secretary Nishantha Ranatunga told ESPNcricinfo. "And Somerset are the marketing arm, having won the rights through a tender process. Nobody can say it is owned by Somerset."

Somerset is responsible for the logistics and marketing of the tournament, a role similar to the one IMG plays for the IPL. And unlike in the IPL where the teams are owned by private franchises, it is SLC that owns the seven teams in the tournament and will determine which players are assigned to which teams, thereby giving them a substantial degree of control over the event.

The BCCI had initially stated it had no problems with the proposed league and that Indian players were free to take part, as long as there was no conflict with India's international or domestic schedule. However, on Saturday came the board's announcement denying permission to the 12 Indian cricketers who'd sought No-Objection Certificates to participate in the SLPL on the grounds that it is Somerset who would be handling the contracts for international players, and that could lead to complications for the players should disputes arise.

That sudden volte face has left SLC "surprised and hurt", Ranatunga said, and the board will be meeting on Monday to discuss how to tackle the situation. "We need to explain the matter to the BCCI and whatever the concerns that they have, we need to give them an explanation. It is very important to have them [Indian players] as they add a lot of value and glamour to the tournament."

However, when asked whether he was hopeful a solution could be found, Ranatunga said, "I really don't know. We will have to wait and see."

The SLPL will be played between July 19 and August 4 at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Several foreign players including Chris Gayle, Kieron Pollard, Shahid Afridi, Daniel Vettori, Kevin O'Brien and Herschelle Gibbs have already been signed for the tournament.

Sue him. What's that got to do with SLPL?

2) Drama played by SLC at the resent IPL..

That's like saying... you left my b'day party early, so I won't come to yours. Grow up, will ya?

3) growing nexic between PCB & SPL against BCCI..

Nexus between PCB and SPL against BCCI? Huh? What kind of nexus?

The only reason BCCI is against SLPL is because Lalit Modi is involved in organising the tournament. Personal vendetta, that's all

Lankan officials to meet BCCI to solve SLPL issue - Hindustan Times

Sports minister Mahindanda Aluthgamage has asked Sri Lankan Cricket officials to meet BCCI bosses to convince them in Indian players' participation in the Sri Lankan Premier League next month. Aluthgamage has asked the SLC chairman DS de Silva and secretary Nishantha Ranatunga to travel to India and
sort out the issue at the earliest with the BCCI officials.

Following this, a meeting has been arranged tomorrow to discuss the BCCI's objections to the Sri Lankan tournament, according to ESPNcricinfo.

"I have instructed the chairman and the secretary to rush to India and convince the Indian board officials to allow their players to play in our tournament," Aluthgamage was quoted as saying by 'Daily Mirror'.

"The chairman will be directly arriving from London, where he has been with the Sri Lanka team, and Ranatunga will join him from Sri Lanka," he added.

Aluthgamage is confident that a solution could be worked out by the two Boards.

"We have good rapport with Indian Board and I am sure the issue will be sorted out amicably. The first edition of this tournament will go ahead as scheduled (July 19 to August 4, 2011)," said the minister.

He also clarified that former Indian Premier League chairman Lalit Modi has nothing to do with the SLPL.

"I can say with 100 per cent assertion there is no role of Lalit Modi in SLPL. I am unaware about his trip to this country, if he had made one two months ago," he explained.

The BCCI had refused No Objection Certificates to 12 Indian players -- Praveen Kumar, Munaf Patel, Irfan Pathan, Dinesh Karthik, R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Manoj Tiwary, Saurabh Tiwary, Umesh Yadav, Vinay Kumar, Manish Pandey and Paul Valthaty -- saying that SLPL is not a tournament to be organised by SLC but by a private party based in Singapore on its behalf.

SLC had denied Indian Cricket Board's claims and said that the event is owned and approved by SLC.
