No discussion on expansion of Quad: India after China’s warning to Bangladesh

Against the backdrop of China's warning that Bangladesh's possible entry into the Quad would impact ties between Dhaka and Beijing, India today made it clear that the expansion of the four-nation grouping was not discussed.

Asked by an Indian journalist about the issue at a virtual media briefing, Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesman Arindam Bagchi said Indian Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla had, after the Quad's first virtual summit held on March 13, said there was no discussion on expansion of the grouping consisting of the US, India, Australia and Japan, reports our New Delhi correspondent.


"Well, I have to say that there was no discussion on expansion of the grouping, I don't think that was something that was envisaged. But some members did speak about working collaboratively with other countries and other regions. In that context, Europe did come up as a region that was taking a greater interest in the Indo-Pacific," Shringla had said.

Asked about the controversial remarks of the Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh on the Quad and Dhaka, Bagchi said "Bangladesh government has already come out with its response on this."

I don't even know why the issue was even brought up? There's no benefit for Bangladesh in joining the QUAD. Why unnecessarily anger China just to please India, when you can one play off the other for maximum benefit.

China knows that Bangladesh is divided between pro India and pro Bangladeshi ( necessarily anti India, hence pro China) , and that's why I don't think they will be angry, although Will show concern.

China knows that Bangladesh is divided between pro India and pro Bangladeshi ( necessarily anti India, hence pro China) , and that's why I don't think they will be angry, although Will show concern.

If really there was no discussion on this matter then why a ) the Chinese ambassador felt the need to spell out clearly the Chinese position on BD joining QUAD. B) Why does India feel the need to repeatedly so no discussion of BD joining Quad C) why media feels to publish this irrelevant back and fort parroting if it is so baseless.

Translation: BD joining QUAD is being considered by GOVT. There is serious lobbying going on behind the scene. the coming months will be interesting.

There is really no such thing as pro BD.BD can easily be split into pro India and anti India.

It's all for journalists. I heard that a Prothom alo journalist ( don't know the name yet) directly ask question to China about it's role in 1971.

However usa was against our independence too , so why only China is challenged?

China definitely has more agents inside Bangladesh even more than raw, it's natural for every country even for Bangladeshi intelligence agencies too.

So I hope they won't let us down.

This is funny that the Chinese are beating India in their own backyard despite the language and cultural barrier.

Regardless such articles prove there is serious lobbying going on for BD to join quad.

Indeed ,but they aren't going to make it open. But surely Bangladesh won't join in quad.

Pro Indians are trying hard I guess , but in the end China knows the pulse of majority of Bangladeshi, and that's why they invested a lot at any cost they will protect their investment.

So win win for both Bangladeshi patriots and Chinese.

Finally India will lost.

Surely Bangladesh won't join in quad.

I don't think so. The only way the Awami league can ensure their stay in power is to Align with quad.

So this will create a pro China reaction in BD .

As for proBD people. I like to think of these bunch as anti India faction. If i had to split BD , it would be pro and anti india .

India has cleaverly used the word "discusson on expansion" and not "Intension of expansion". Chinese ambassador appologized also for china's bluff.

So without Chinese support BAL can't survive.

Remember why khaleda Zia fall so pathetically? I believe one reason was for their support to Taiwanese movement that China disliked.

China is now global leader not America. It will be open to you after few years or less maybe.

If what You say is correct than BAL stays in power but the pro India faction is eliminated for good.
