Yunus files stay petition

Dhaka, Mar 9 (bdnews24.com) — Muhammad Yunus has filed a petition seeking a stay order on the High Court judgment upholding his dismissal as the Grameen Bank managing director. Yunus' lawyer filed the petition with the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Wednesday, an official at the court told bdnews24.com. The bench of justices Muhammed Mamtaz Uddin Ahmed and Gobinda Chandra Tagore on Tuesday dismissed a writ petition of the Nobel laureate challenging the legality of a Bangladesh Bank order firing him from the Grameen Bank post.

The court also rejected another petition filed by nine directors of the bank against the Bangladesh Bank's Mar 2 order and observed that the Grameen Bank founder had been reappointed improperly.

The Nobel laureate lost the legal battle to retain his job in the bank set up in 1983, after hearing on Thursday, Sunday and Monday

US still hopes for an acceptable solution to Yunus affair

Dhaka, Mar 8 (UNB)- The United States still hopes that an acceptable compromise could be figured out of the conundrum of Nobel Laureate Prof Yunus’s post in Grameen Bank.

After the High Court verdict that dismissed Prof Yunus’ writ challenging his removal order from the Managing Director post of the Grameen Bank, a spokesperson for the US embassy here told UNB they continue to monitor the situation.

“ We continue to monitor the situation and hope that an acceptable compromise can be reached,” the spokesperson said

Prof Yunus flies to Washington to hold crisis meeting with Hillary on Mar 8

Dhaka, Mar 3 (UNB)- Nobel Laureate and Grameen Bank boss Prof Yunus flies to Washington to hold crisis meeting with US secretary of state Hillary Clinton on March 8. The crisis deepened following his dismissal from the office of Managing Director of the Grameen Bank he founded in 1983. The United States has already expressed its concern over the removal of Prof Yunus by the Bangladesh Bank. A US spokesperson said, “We are deeply troubled.”

“Secretary Clinton looks forward to meeting Dr. Yunus on March 8 in Washington to discuss this concern and other issues,” the spokesperson told UNB. The US expressed the hope that a mutually satisfactory compromise can be achieved that will ensure Grameen Bank's autonomy and effectiveness. The spokesperson further says “We continue to follow developments closely and await clarification from the Government of Bangladesh and Grameen Bank.

“Civil society organizations such as Grameen Bank play an important role in Bangladesh's development and democracy.” Meanwhile, the UK says they are following development concerning Grameen Bank “very closely”, alongside the rest of the international community. “We’re aware of the events concerning Prof Yunus,” a spokesperson for the British High Commission here told UNB.

The spokesperson said “we understand this is now a matter before the court.” “Grameen Bank is a well-known and well-respected development institution. We wish to see it continue to play its important role in Bangladesh and globally,” the spokesperson said. “We have great respect for Prof Yunus and the work he has carried out with Grameen Bank.”
