No Chinese Troops in Gilgit: Pakistan

Rejecting as "fabricated" reports of presence of up to 11,000 Chinese troops in ***'s Gilgit- Baltistan area, Pakistan's envoy here has claimed that only a "humanitarian team" from China was in the region to assist the flood victims.

"The story is not true and totally fabricated," Pakistan's ambassador to China, Masood Khan, told the state-run 'Global Times' daily.

He was referring to a New York Times report which said that about 7,000 to 11,000 Chinese troops were deployed in the strategic Gilgit-Baltistan region, where Pakistan faced a state of rebellion from the local people.

Khan said there were no Chinese troops in the area, but added that "a humanitarian team" from China was currently there to help locals who have suffered due to the devastating floods.

The NYT report attributed the military presence in the region to China's plans to gain a "grip on the strategic area to ensure unfettered road and rail access to the Gulf through Pakistan."

About the NYT story, the Global Times said "the report obviously rattled nerves in India..."

This is the first time that the Chinese media carried the NYT report after it was published on August 28. However, there is no official Chinese reaction so far.

India on Monday said that it was making "independent verification" of the NYT report about presence of Chinese troops in Gilgit-Baltistan region and added that it would be a matter of "serious concern" if it turns out to be true.

Reacting to the NYT report, Zhao Gancheng, director of South Asia Studies at the Shanghai Institute for International Studies ( SIIS), told the Global Times that the speculation in the report on Sino-Pakistan cooperation is senseless.

Its not rocket science who have built Karakorum highway? On the chinese govt.'s instruction the Pakistani ambassador is telling white lies.

This type of provocation and illegal military buildup are against regional peace and stability. And also a threat to world and USA. America and Russia should work out their respective strategy in this regard.

I think it is a bit ironic that the Times of India is helping spread the "white lies" and covering up "illegal military build up" that will endager "regional peace and stability".

Pak covers up for China on land 'grab'?

1 Sep 2010, 1858 hrs IST
Two days after a 'New York Times' report said that Pakistan had allowed Chinese troops to enter Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (P oK), the Pakistan foreign office has dismissed the reports.

Calling it as misrepresentation of facts, Pakistan's Foreign Office spokesman Abdul Basit said that the reports were a figment of the media's imagination.

Basit also dismissed India's concerns over the reports, saying that India has no locus standi in the Gilgit-Baltistan area.

Basit said, "There are no Chinese troops in the area. The article by Selig Harrison is based on a 'figment of imagination' and is a gross misrepresentation of facts. We had asked for Chinese assistance to repair the Karakoram highway which has been damaged by floods. There are no Chinese troops as claimed by the report. There is no locus standi as far as Gilgit-Baltistan is concerned for India. We totally reject these claims."

The article written in 'The New York Times' had reported that the Gilgit-Baltistan region of the Pakistan Occupied Kashmir had been handed over to China and that 10,000 Chinese troops had moved into the area.
:angry::angry:
The report had claimed that troops of the Peoples Liberation Army (PLA) have moved into the area and a geo-political crisis was unfolding in the region.

And after the reports came out, Indian Foreign Minsitry spokesperson said that they were seeking independent verification of the reports.

The problem is the news has already been debunked. It first popped up in the editorial section (where a journalist shows his OPINION) and the said author backed up none of his claims with any source. Now we have the national government of Pakistan coming out to openly disprove the article. Do you seriously believe an editor who, for all we know, might not even set foot upon the Kashmir or a national government?

Please do not show photos display chinese people. That will make somebody here uncomfortabLe.
Keep in mind we are diffirent from pakistanis and indians.

Any Indian will believe anything other then pakistani Govt./army/ISI specifically in case of Kashmir.

Well I remember senior Chinese and Pak members mentioning in another thread that Chinese soldiers are helping build the highways and the rail link in Gilgit and Baltistan. So either the members or GoP are lying.

There is another thread on the same issue where it has been debated at length. It's in the strategic affairs section.

First, the whole article is a piece of crap. Second, it shouldn't be an issue for you since it is Pakistani territory.

Cant believe New York Times the most known newspaper have started publishing lame articles, how absurd:tdown:

Eversince the KKH was built, there has been sort of an agreement under which the chinese upkeep the road to a certain point. So there has been presence of the chinese enginners, laborers in the area. The article has exagerrated it and blew it out of proportion. As far as the rail link is concerned, it is still a paper project.
