Indigenous nuclear submarine to undergo missile firing tests

Indigenous nuclear submarine to undergo missile firing tests
New Delhi, Oct 11, 2015, PTI:
India plans to build at least two more Arihant-class submarines. India had started building Arihant in the 1990s under its highly secretive ATV (Advanced Technology Vessel) programme. DH file photo
India's first indegenously developed nuclear submarine Arihant, which has "successfully" completed the sea trials held so far, will undergo its maiden missile firing test this month, top defence sources said.

The aim is to handover the submarine to the Indian Navy during the International Fleet Review scheduled in February next year in Vishakapatnam, they said.

"The tests held so far has been successful. We will, this month, fire Nirbhay missile from the submarine which will be followed by firing of another type of missile," the sources said.

While Nirbhay is a 1000-km-long range subsonic cruise missile, the next missile would be India's first Subamrine Launched Ballistic Missile (SLBM), which has a range of about 700 kms. These would be followed by another few rounds of tests.

India plans to build at least two more Arihant-class submarines. India had started building Arihant in the 1990s under its highly secretive ATV (Advanced Technology Vessel) programme.

Though Arihant was initially supposed to be a fast-attack submarine, the project was realingned to make it a ballistic missile submarine following the nuclear test conducted by India in 1998.

After its launch in 2009, Arihant went through extensive tests including harbour acceptance trials with the on-board reactor going critical in 2013. It left the harbour for its sea trials in December 2014.

Well that was quick considering that the ground based version has been tested one once!
SL Nirbhay would be a great asset to IN!!
Sir can you tell me whether SL Nirbhay can be launched from the new Scorpenes?

This comes as an absolute surprise! Is it for real? Anyways here are the filaments of Nirbhay Cruise Missile -

already??I thought they'd fire K-15 first.

It's surprising to see nirbhay to be launched from arihant. I thought it would be k15 followed by k5. Well if test fired arihant will become ssgn as well:yahoo:. But I think it's misreported :undecided:

Somehow I cant believe these news .After all this is just another product of Indian media.

Nirbhay is still in development stage.

Scorpene has 533mm torpedo tubes. It will carry black shark torpedo and Exocet as anti ship. Although arihant has same 533mm torpedo tubes for cruise missile as well and its going to fire nirbhay, scorpene may be developed to carry nirbhay but I can't confirm it . But 75i will certainly carry nirbhay

Considering that Nirbhay SLCM hasn't been fired via a submersible pontoon (or any other submarine for that matter), would it be advisable to risk IN's prime vessel for the test launch?

Since Bhrahmos submarine variety is in development for a long time, I think it will be tested ahead of Nirbhay..

Nirbhay can easily follow the Bhramos path..

Most probably its a wrong report .it may be k15 again .. But if true , it would be an outstanding achievement for DRDO to develop a slcm in a record time

This is the real surprise for me.
I was taken aback when I first saw this news posted by hindustan78.
Man that's called a surprise.:D

will Nirbhay fit the same tubes like K15. K15 are fitting 3 in each tube in vertical launch configuration.. So i am asking is Nirbhay also similarly able to fit 3 in nos in each tube in the same configuration.

IF not, will it be fired from torpedo tubes same like popeye turbo in Dolphin II operated by Israel and made by France..

Nirbhay is just 0.52m in diameter with 6m length. implying its sleeker than K15

Look at the last figure, with diameter of 0.66m (bottom right 4th quadrant), 6+1(center) or even worst case scenario 6 missiles of diameter 0.66 m can be fitted in a single tube vs K15 diameter of 0.93m type 3 in nos (as shown in top left 1st quadrant)

Btw also it can be configured to fire from 533mm tube as its diameter is just 0.52m whichh Arihant is suppose to have 6 in numbers (6x533mm torpedo tubes)

i say each Arihant will carry
Tube Vertical config - 6-7 Nirbhays in each tube based on above diagram
Tube torpedo - Any number based on reload perhaps 6 SLCMs in single salvo mode before full reloads..
