Nine militants killed as jets pound Orakzai hideouts
Sunday, 14 Mar, 2010
PARACHINAR, Pakistan: Fighter jets bombed a series of Taliban hideouts in the Orakzai tribal region, killing nine insurgents, local official Rasheed Khan said.
Khan said the hideouts were in the village of Mero Bak in Orakzai.
He said one of the targeted houses belonged to a local Taliban commander, Aslam Farooqi, though it was not clear if Farooqi was among those killed.
Orakzai is the base of Pakistani Taliban chief Hakeemullah Mehsud, who officials believe was killed in a US missile strike early this year. The group insists he is alive, but has not provided any evidence to back up its claims.
