What's new

Nihonjin1051's trip to Philadelphia Chinatown!

Longans ! These are awesome ! But I don't think they're in season yet? You know what was also selling at the Chinese market ? Rambotans? Cantonese folks call it Huong mou daan . They were all sold out tho, unfortunately. Seriously i think its a Chinese culture thing where everyone goes out on Saturdays or Sundays to buy veggies & goods? The whole place was packed.....literally....

Ah, interesting ! I didn't know that Florida had such an extensive list of exotic fruits grow there !!

What I'm looking around is what we Japanese call 柿 "Kaki" , I think the American tongue it is referred as "Persimmon".

Looks like this....

Ever heard of it before? Or ever tasted it? ^__^

My parents can haggle but Im too timid to try.

LOL, just do what I do, call every single old lady in the store as "Zhongguo Mama":lol::lol::lol:

It works...all the time.

It's sold in most big supermarkets. I personally don't like them.

The only places that I can find these are at Wegman's or Whole Foods. I usually have to treck it to Philadelphia Chinatown during Season to find these tho. I prefer the ones sold in the Chinese supermarkets, they're usually harvested from either Japan or China. Tastes better....

Not sure where most persimmons are sourced. They do grow them in California.

China buy the best quality Longans and Lychees from Vn and sell them to USA, the funny thing is that CN sell those fruits in cheaper price than VN selling in USA ::cheesy:

Bro, the only place where Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese, Filipinos, Thais and even Indians, Pakistanis get along is in the Chinese supermarkets, lol. Seriously, the Chinatown in Philly is like a haven for Asian Americans trying to find that little sense of "home taste" or "home recipes". :)

That's what I love about Philly Chinatown. On one street, i can see Chinese restaurants dotting the streets, the on the next street corner, I'll see Vietnamese pho shops, then across the street an Indian restaurant, then the next street -- Thai and Filipino stores..lol!

VN Longans season in VN is coming now, soon u will get the best VN longan in USA within 3 or 4 weeks, and maybe CNese will still be the main Longans sellers there coz they can offer cheaper price than VN sellers

Bro, there are Vietnamese supermarkets right next door to the Chinese owned ones. Yes, they sell fruits, but i think they have less focus on fruits and veggies (the Chinese supermarket in Chinatown is huge, super huge ) , and they focus more on raw fish, different types of fish (tuna, salmon, sea bass, flounder, crabs, shellfish, eel etc), and other types of meat. The Vietnamese section in Chinatown does have lots of Vietnamese bakeries ! They sell really nice affordable mini-subs called Banh Mi. The way the Vietnamese folks prepare the dicon is also really good! Definitely you guys have awesome preparation standards !

Well you know what that means? I'll be heading back to Chinatown Philly in 2-3 weeks' time, LOL !

The trick, bro, is to buy them when they're just ripe. Sometimes, what i do is buy a dozen or two and let it ripen after 3-5 days' time. When its ripe...soft...juicy...bro its like reaching Sidrah ! ;)
