A night train trip from Hanoi (Gia Lam station) to Nanning (Nanning East station) in Guangxi province, China. it departs from around 22:00 in Hanoi daily and arrives in Nanning East station 10h later.

The trip above was in Jun 2018.

Although daily bus from Hanoi to Nanning, which departs daily from Tran Quang Khai street, is more popular, the train trip is highly recommended. It takes more time because passengers have to wait for several hours at both Dong Dang station (Vietnam side) and Pingxiang (Bằng Tường) station (Chinese side) (around 10km apart) for immigration documentation.

Train runs on standard gauge and uses Chinese coaches. It is hauled by Vietnam locomotive until Dong Dang station (on the border).

From Nanning, one can take high-speed train to Beijing. The trip lasts for 23 hours.

Cannot wait until the connecting line between HaLong to Mong Cai (on the Vietnam China border) is built. Then one can take train from Dongxing (Đông Hưng) (China side) to Hanoi.

Unfortunately, passengers now can no longer take the direct train from Hanoi to Kunming. They have to take the train (narrow gauge) to Lao Cai station, then walk through the border and take the standard gauge train at Hekou Bei station (in Hekou, China) to go to Kunming.

This needs to be better facilitated. Maybe the two sides can streamline the document checking procedure on a shared platform, thereby, cleared in one of the sides means being cleared on both.

yes. If passengers can do documentation work at both ends (Hanoi station and Nanning station, similar to flight), I believe the number can increase a lot.

I recently drove thru Belgium and Netherlands. Waiting time at the border: zero second. Because there is zero border control.Similar to other EU countries. Only I have to wait a minute or two when visiting Switzerland.there is border control. The country isn’t part of EU. I don’t think we will see it between Vietnam and China in our life time.

Good news, hope to see a high speed rail link from Hanoi to Kunming and more cooperation between China and Vietnam, we are alike anyway.
