Nigeria likely to throw out Indians after Goa’s crackdown on Africans

By Mayabhushan Nagvenkar
Panaji:
Nigeria will throw out thousands of Indians residing there, if the Goa government does not stop evicting Nigerians living in the tourist state, their consular official has warned, even as the Goa government’s crackdown on the African community has threatened to start a diplomatic row.

Consular attaché to the Nigerian embassy in New Delhi, Jacob Nwadadia told Firstpost on Monday afternoon that if the police did not stop evicting Nigerian nationals from their homes forcibly, by 9 pm (India Standard Time), then “thousands of Indian nationals living in Nigeria will be thrown on the streets too”.

The warning comes after ministers of the Goa government including the chief minister himself and the state administration cracked down on the African community, after over 200 Nigerians blockaded a national highway for hours on Thursday following the murder of their compatriot. According to chief minister Manohar Parrikar the murder was a result of a war between two narcotics peddling gangs.

Parrikar also said that antecedents and documents of all foreign nationals living in Goa would be verified, the police as well as BJP workers have unleashed a campaign of terror on Nigerians, evicting them from their rented homes.

“There are only 50,000 Nigerians living in India, but there are over one million Indians living in Nigeria,” Jacob said, making the none-too-discreet threat.

Jacob said that he had been instructed by the Nigerian ambassador in New Delhi to convey the caution to the Goa government in no uncertain terms.

Jacob said that Nigeria was five hours behind India, and that the deadline given to the Goa government was 9 pm. “When it is 9 pm in India, it would be 4 pm in Nigeria. If the eviction does not stop, then we will take similar action in Nigeria,” said Jacob, who met Nigerians, police as well as district administration officials through Sunday and Monday.

Jacob also said that he would revoke hundreds of visas of Indians in Nigeria in reciprocation to the action against Nigerians in Goa.

The police action against Nigerians aside the manner in which they have been referred to by Goa’s lawmakers, including the chief minister himself borders on racism.

While Goa’s minister for culture and art Dayanand Mandrekar likened Nigerians to cancer, another BJP legislator Subhash Phaldesai said that their behaviour was similar “wild animals”, who were pumped with drugs.

Parrikar himself, while addressing a press conference said that Nigerians are “huge” and “aggressive”, while defending the inability of the police to nip the Thursday’s highway blockade in the bud.

1 in 168 is Indian..LOL..

tha B0z0 lost his mind..he should read this...

“NIGERIA may soon benefit from a $12billion (N1.404trillion) investments from India. Already, some businessmen from the Asian country are presently negotiating with Federal authorities on the possibility of citing many projects in the country. The Indian Deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria, Anil Trigunyat, who broke the news in Abuja yesterday during a press briefing on the India-Africa Business Partnership Summit scheduled to take place between January 19 and 20 in Asok Hotel, New Delhi listed areas of interest by his country to include refineries, power plants, solid minerals, fertilizer plants among others. According to him, about 20 different draft agreements on some of the projects were in various stages of negotiation between relevant agencies and the Indian companies. He said that already, two power plants are being planned for the Niger Delta area because of the availability of gas to produce a combined 1,200mw of electricity, refineries with a production capacity of 180, 000 barrels per day at $5billion; and another $5billion fertilizer production company.

In addition, Mr. Trigunyat disclosed that another Indian firm has just arrived in Nigeria to negotiate for the resuscitation and management of abandoned steel projects. He stated that the January summit being packaged in Nigeria by African Theatrical Project would enable members of the Nigerian business community to meet their Indian counterparts and discuss more areas of possible collaboration. Already, India has made a $100million bilateral line of credit available to Nigeria, which will afford businesses opportunity to import from the Asian country in addition to the $200 million issued to ECOWAS businesses. The Deputy High Commissioner also said that some of his country's banks are preparing to open their branches in Nigeria, while Nigerian banks also exploring the possibility of extending to his country. Currently, Indian companies are the second largest employer of labour in Nigeria outside the Federal Government, he said, adding that the summit, which was instituted in 1927 by the late Sir Mahatma Ghandi would further enhance trade and cultural relations between the two countries”.

“There are only 50,000 Nigerians living in India, but there are over one million Indians living in Nigeria,” Jacob said, making the none-too-discreet threat.

So is he saying that 50,000 Nigerians are causing more trouble for India, than one million Indians are causing for Nigeria.

So they came all the way to India just to be drug dealers and gang members?
Yes. The Indian state of Goa is notorious for these kinds of activities, drugs, prostitution. It is considered a "party" place, wherelots of outsiders/tourists flock to, kind of like Vegas in USA.

Keep in mind, Nigeria are not denying that Nigerians exist in Goa, but they are saying that their drug dealers should not be arrested which is unfair.

Its other way round actually , india needs Nigeria more ...

what ever investment india is doing in Nigeria is to over indian needs where as Nigeria is acting cool ... they know there is nothing to loose, if its not india, some other country will come for these projects anyway...

so indian need to see the game in bigger context so they will loose out...

A good percentage of them, Yes.

You are mistaken.
If India starts withdrawing from Nigeria, it would be a huge blow for them. Simply the employement created by India and Indian companies in Nigeria is the second largest after the Govt of Nigeria and money they earn off exports.

Money talks. India has it. Nigeria likes it.

Indian expats in Nigeria are in business contributing to Nigeria's economy. Nigerians in India are drug peddlers contributing to crime rate. Yeah Right ! kick out Indians see how economy suffers.

Nigeria expelling Indians will harm them not us, as Indians there are in industry and business contributing to there economy not as drug peddlers

Nigerians are being targeted in most countries including in African countries. I cannot understand why such a huge percentage of their expats internationally are responsible for drugs, human trafficking, 9/11 scams etc. This seems to be a common trend with them. Apparently they behave in Nigeria since their government doesn't hesitate to whip them into place. This threat was also levied against South Africa some years ago but was never carried out. Instead of complaining, the Nigerian government should try to establish why so many of their citizens become delinquents when they head off elsewhere

IMO,the Goan Govt's reaction on the nigerian issue wasn't right either.A politician made some derogatory comments on nigerians, equating'em to cancer :angry:
