How is India an industrialised nation when more than 50% of its population are still agrarians?

at the time of independence share of agriculture in GDP of India was 80%

It has fallen to 14% now due to growth of Service and Industries

India is now much more industrialized as compared to 1947, one reason is heavy industries set up by GOI since 1960s especially steel plants

India is now 6th largest producer of automobiles, 4th largest producer of steel and 2nd largest producer of Cement in world

India needs tons of small and medium scale industries in the manufacturing sector. We don't want all the calculators and nail cutters to be imported from China. India has a huge market and GOI should formulate a policy and support structure for entrepreneurs.

Agreed with a cheap 1.2 billion population it is surprising that we need to import nuts, bolts and nailcutters from China. Surely this shows that something is lacking in our economic policies.

How exactly does UN classify developed nations?
At least Turkey should have been considered industrialized/developed by now.

Everything is not what it seems. Turkey has really massive inequality problems, look at the Human Development Index, you will see that we rank beyond pathetic. Almost half of the world are doing better than Turkey....

Yeah well indians twist numbers a lot. They compare their 8% growth with China's 8% growth(right now we can't do even that because we are on 5%) but while comparing it like that we forget that china has 3x India's per capita and hence their % is very very high compared to India. To be comparable to that india needs a double digit growth on basis of something like 12% , which is not impossible as Subramanian Swamy has said.

I would post China's GDP 5x India's. Anyone double check the figures?

Even Japan is 3x India's.

Aaaaaaaaand here it comes: Super  Just turn another thread into a brainless BJP vs. Congress troll thread and boast about Modis future achievements which will come true, not matter what happens till then :hitwall:
We are progressing fairly well now. Dont expect 8 % growth in these times.

You don,t knew their is drought in Maharashtra, because Sonia is Italian.

You are talking about share of GDP, I was talking about share of workforce.

Formal20and20informal20employment20by20sector.jpg

Since the majority of Indians are still employed in the agriculture but only contributes 14 % of the GDP, it only means that Indian farmers are abjectly poor.

Given that there are only 11 countries with a population of over 100 m, it doesn't take much to be in the top 10 in virtualy every thing for India being the second most populous country in the world. The fact that India is placed at no. 9 in industrial output is not a proof that India is industrialised, it's rather the opposite.

The graph above also indicates that a large percentage of Indias aren't employed in the formal sectors, which also is an indication of low organisation and thus low industrialisation. The higher a country is developed the more organised it becomes.

Philippine is in that list? That's a surprise. Btw turkey is most likely counted as a developed state by CIA stats.

Of course on only idiots calls the philippines a 3rd world country we have industries here but its small our largest industries are agricultural the rest is manufacturing especially semi conductors and electronic parts (hint if you have PSP the charger is made in the Philippines) and we also make car parts for our local consumption the rest are exported but its still small and we also make ships (we are the 4th largest ship builder in the world) but this purely for export we only do ship repair here for local ship industry here (i know its odd that we don't make ship for ourselves) the rest are bpo industries call centers etc but still majority of GDP is still remittances that why we are on the list those industries are growing but its still too small to make us fully industrialized since many of our professionals and skilled workers are only working here for 10 years or less then leave for other countries. ( Warning: Please ignore any Chinese propaganda that will follow this reply to this post because they baseless and only for propaganda proposes only they no basis in reality and fact Thank you)

@post 28> I agree India is not enough industrialized but compared to 50s and 60s it is much more industrialized, i would say in in regard of industrialization and heavy industries 1950s India was pre-1930 USSR and today's India is Post-1945 US
